Hunter Running for District 3 Commission Seat

  • May 12, 2012

Planning commissioner Tommy Hunter has announced his intent to seek election as Gwinnett County's District 3 Commissioner.

In an announcement on the Elect Tommy Hunter Facebook page, Hunter cites issues including the county water supply, transportation, budget and open communications as part of his reason for seeking office.

“This is a wonderful district that I have loved my entire life, it deserves a County Commissioner who has an open-door policy toward constituents. I will offer that open-door if I am fortunate enough to serve you in this office,” Hunter stated in a press release.

Hunter added, “I will not forget who my boss is when elected – which are the residents of district three.”

In a post on his Facebook page, Hunter also weighed in on incumbent Mike Beaudreau's recent suggestion that the county sales tax be increased in order to provide property tax relief.

"Don't know about y'all, but I wouldn't mind replacing our entire property tax system with a sales tax and banning property taxes forever. But since that isn't gonna happen, how about government start paying for only the things we NEED and lower property taxes without having to add another one percent sales tax to do it? You know kind of like we citizens have to do when we hit lean times. What a novel idea!" Hunter wrote.

Hunter currently serves on the Gwinnett County Planning Commission and served four years as a member of the Gwinnett County Water and Sewerage Authority. He is currently employed as an engineering consultant and owns two businesses. Hunter resides in Buford with his wife Judith and two children.

So Tommy now lives in District 3. So let's see he ran in District 3 when Commissioner Beaudreau won his first commission election, moved to District 4 to run again for commissioner and failed to make the runoff, now due to redistricting he is back in District 3 and running again. Humm he is becoming a perennial candidate. (Q) How do you know it is election season? (A) Tommy Hunter is running for something.

Question I have is if he now lives in District 3, what the heck is he doing on the Planning Commission representing District 4. Seems like the ethical thing to do would have been to resign his Planning Commission post, once redistricted, in favor of someone who actually lives in the district

I was under the impression that Mr. Hunter lives in District four until Jan. 2013. Correct me if I'm wrong Mr. Sullivan. Not sure why he would step down in his current role on the planning commission either. He made a commitment, and personally I like a man that's not a quiter. I'm also pretty sure that he's not the only one that serves on the planning commisiion that was redistricted. You make joke's about election and so forth, and that's all well and good. I'm quite sure I have seen your name on the ballot as well. Your comments don't have much merit with me, and I hope others that read them will see through them as well! Tommy Hunter has my vote!!!
