The USPS is teaming up with letter carriers nationwide on Saturday, May 12. Letter carriers will collect food donations left in mailboxes and deliver them to food banks and other hunger relief organizations.

According to a press release from the USPS nearly 49 million Americans, including 16 million children are struggling with hunger and on May 12 the USPS hopes to provide assistance to millions of Americans through the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive.

“The Postal Service is pleased to continue supporting the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) as we enter our 20th year together to help ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ in America,” stated Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. “I am confident the 2012 campaign will be our best ever because the need continues to grow.”

Residents across the country are encouraged to leave a bag of non-perishable food where letter carriers normally deliver the mail on Saturday, May 12. Food will then be picked up and delivered to local banks.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive, the nation's largest single day food drive. Last year Americans donated 70.2 million pounds of food.
