Beaudreau Headed for Runoff, TSPLOST Fails and Broun, Balfour Win Big

Gwinnett County District 3 commission incumbent fails to secure enough votes to avoid a runoff.

Though he managed to secure over 47 percent of the vote in a four-man race, the vote tally fell short of the majority total Mike Beaudreau needed to avoid a runoff. With all precincts reporting, Beaudreau had 47 percent of the vote followed by Tommy Hunter with 22 percent and Jerry Oberholtzer with 20 percent. Dacula resident Mike Korom finished last with 10 percent.

The runoff between Beaudreau and Hunter will be held Aug. 21.

Voters Say No to TSPLOST

Despite a massive marketing campaign designed to convince voters that the future of Atlanta depended upon passage of the 10-year, 1 percent transportation sales tax or TSPLOST, the referendum failed by a wide margin with 62.59 percent voting against the measure. A TSPLOST referendum was held in each of Georgia's 10 transportation districts. Of those 10 districts, only three (Heart of Georgia Altamaha District, River Valley District and Central Savannah River Area District) passed the referendum.

Incumbents Cruise to Victory

U.S. Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. overwhelmingly won his reelection bid for the 10th District Congressional seat with just under 69 percent of the vote.

State Senator Don Balfour, whose 9th district covers much of Dacula, also sailed to an easy win with over Republican challengers Steve Ramey and Travis Bowden with 62 percent of the vote. Balfour will face Democratic challenger Scott Drake in November.

Judicial Races

Chris Ballar defeated Marlene Duwell in the race for probate judge. In the race to succeed Dawson Jackson for Superior Court judge, Kathy Schrader was the top vote getter with 43 percent of the vote. She will face second place finisher Tracey Mason Blasi in a runoff. The race for State Court judge to succeed Robert Mock is also headed to a runoff. The top two vote finishers were Emily Brantley (27.95 percent) and Pam Britt (26.87 percent).

Ballot Questions

Republican and Democratic voters had the opportunity to share their opinion on several issues through non-binding questions on the party ballots. The GOP ballot had five non-binding questions and the Democratic ballot had four statewide questions and four local questions.

Republican voters were almost evenly split on whether or not the state should offer casino gambling and direct the proceeds to education. A scant majority -- 50.25 percent -- said yes.

GOP voters were also split on whether citizens should have to register by political party in advance to vote in a primary. The majority -- 53 percent -- said no.

Republican voters were more united on whether gifts from lobbyists should be capped at $100 with 87 percent voting yes. GOP voters also showed strong support for allowing active duty military personnel under the age of 21 to obtain a Georgia weapons license (69 percent in favor) and for amending the state constitution to protect life from its earliest biological beginnings (66 percent).

Democrat voters showed support for ending the practice of unlimited gifts from lobbyists to state legislators (72 percent in favor), adopting an income tax credit for home energy costs (72 percent supported) and reducing sales tax on made in Georgia products (87 percent in favor).

Results of the other statewide question -- whether the state constitution should be amended to allow the state to override local school board decisions regarding charter schools -- showed 56 percent opposed.

In the additional Gwinnett County non-binding questions, Democratic voters expressed support for limited commercial flights out of Briscoe (54 percent) and casino gambling in Gwinnett County (53 percent). Democrats also agreed that $50,000 was an adequate salary for the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioner chairman (68 percent voted yes). Democratic voters were also united in their lack of knowledge regarding a Saturday early voting day for the November election with 77 percent indicating they did not know about it.

M.K., By that reasoning didn't 77% say no to Tommy Hunter? American Patriot, it is interesting that you equate Beaudreau getting more than twice as many votes as his nearest competitor as 'one foot out the door.' Beaudreau came within a hair of getting more votes than his three competitors combined. This is clear( and clean) Beaudreau victory

Ned I disagree with you. I think the majority of the turn out yesterday was to vote against the TSPLOST. Chances are a large majority of those voters voted for the incumbent. They are not likely to vote in the run off. My guess is the people who voted for Jerry and Tommy will come out again and Tommy will get the votes.

53% voted for someone other than Beaudreau. Unfortunately, his opposition was split among four contenders. He will probably win the run off since many rarely vote in run-offs. Hopefully, he will listen to the people this time and realize he dodged a bullet and start voting as his constituents want instead of the lobbyists.

We the people are over that smug egomaniac! Did you know he has hired a lawyer! What is shirly girl going to say about him? Floyd has a big crush on mike, it makes him blind! The folks that want him out will show back up to the poles to see to it he is gone. Beaudreau has retained an attorney. Hmmmm I wonder why? I thinks it's clear he has issues around the corner. Why else would he need an attorney? Lets just send him home so he focus on his legal battles and get some common sense in district 3!

You should stand by your math Ned. It's correct. However, you must look at the big picture. Both Beaudreau and Hunter had four other competitors. Beaudreau being the incumbent received 47% and the other four received 53%. Now that the field is down to two, its a direct comparison match. I think MB will win even though I hope he doesn't. He started out OK but has become arrogant. And arrogance from an elected official is inexcusable.

We shall see on 8-22. I liked the balloons they tied on the signs too. That made them pop! LOL I told everyone that this was a Hunter-Beaudreau race in the begining and so far I was right. @ J...(1) It's not a hunter-beaudreau race...it's a Beaudreau-Hunter race. Mike more than doubled your guy.

(2) You said countless times here that Commissioner Beaudreau was in trouble. You were clearly and obviously wrong. No shock here though...I told you otherwise.

(3) You are actually going to criticize someone in a 4 person race not quite getting 50% of the vote?

(4) You are right about one thing, the core (hereafter referred to as the haters) will come out again...but where is hunter going to get the other 35% of the vote? Answer...no where.

(5) Lest you forget, Mike has been in the position of being in a runoff after finishing first in a primary. He knows how to campaign in the environment.

Keep thinking it was TSPLOST and forgetting to see what the turnout percentage was vs. history. Yall talk a semi good game but keep leaving out the fact that your guy got doubled.

Not really hate, he just sees one heck of an example of Washington politic right here in the little river county tis all.

I mean didn't the county have to make sure it "PAID" for the senior discount just like the big boys and girls outta DC? I'm sure I could get the link out of the Gwinnett Daily site if anyone needs it ...

And the absolute best part is to "pay for it" the BOC RAISED fees / taxes on other county citizens to grant that small subset of seniors the 20 dollar a year break! Shucks, they worked really hard to be sure the county didn't lose a dime out of its cut too.

Its EASY to be liked giving away other peoples money in an election year don't you think?

We don't have to send our politicians to the gold dome in GA now to gain experience, they are ready for service in Washington DC coming right off the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners.

Fact: Der Komissar claims to be a conservative.
Also Fact: Der Komissar is in love with big government with big government spending (see trash plan, et. al.)
Fact: I've had three conversations with Der Komissar over the years, all of which were ended by condescending, arrogant remarks from him.

Those are all FACTS, whether you like them or not. And why I choose not to support him. But since you two are so close, ask him this: Why, when he's SO opposed to Robo-calls, did he have one call ME, of all people, the day after the election to thank me for my support and to please keep my sign up a few more weeks.

(2) For any quasi "big spending" you can pull up I can give you 100 times where he's attacked the budget questioning the need for even some of the smallest items. Your taxes are as low as they are now, in comparison, in part because of Mike Beaudreau.
(3) It's funny that you talk about your three conversations and how they ended which is obviously unprovable but given how you conduct yourself here I have little doubt that you lead the way on being condesending.

The first item listed on District 3 Commissioner Mike Beaudreau’s re-election campaign website, under “What’s Been Accomplished” is his support of the Gwinnett Chamber’s Partnership Gwinnett program. I have repeatedly asked Mike questions about taxpayer funding of the Gwinnett Chamber, and despite repeated promises to get back to me, I have not received any information from him. If Mike’s # 1 accomplishment as a commissioner is supporting the Gwinnett Chamber, you would think that he would be happy to brag about it.

Whether or not the actually will make it out to vote is another question. Folks that complain heavily tend to be very negative and negative folks don't vote. They are happier sitting at home complaining about the situation, fixing things will only lead to then having nothing to complain about.

Tommy will also run into Kroum & jerry fans and talk to them. The majority will become underwhelmed by his intellectual prowess and constant worrying threat we don’t have another lake for water and that his supposed “report” hasn’t been acted upon. They will suspect that it must not be that good because A0 it has been ignored and B) he has never posted any of the info in the report for discussion. He just complains that it has been ignored. These folks will be scared that Tommy might win and they will go and vote for Mike if for no other reason that the Devil ya know is better than the twit, or Devil ya don’t.

People act from fear, they will go and vote for Mike for fear of Tommy getting elected. Mikes supporters will return in force. Mike will win by a landslide. Tommy will then move back to district 4 in hopes of John Heard supporting him in his next run.

In all due respect Timothy you really need to not be such a sore loser. If Tommy doesnt win then he doesnt win. By your post here I can see why you didnt. I think It's pretty sad that you couldnt win with Mike B knocking on doors for you. That tells me all I need to know about you. I wonder if your this abbrasive in person or just behind a keyboard. You seem to have a man crush on Tommy. Thats fine, I have one on Ronald Regan...... I have never seen such a sor loser! Wow! Now just what if Tommy does win? Just what will that do for your ego? You know I can respect Floyd at least he can get the fact of respect in this race. Again such a sore loser!

Regardless of WHO you support here, it’s interesting to compare the results of Mr. Balfour’s results with Mike B’s from the primary vote.

Both were incumbents.

Both faced multiple parties in the primary.

Mr. Balfour had a documented ethics case raised against him over double dipping on per diem reimbursements and NOT installing the expense audit committee his elected office required. He was found in conflict.
YET Balfour wins and doesn’t face a runoff….

Mike B. has NO ethics charges pending at this point and yet ends up in a runoff.
So Tim Sullivan may have a point demonstrated by Mr. Balfour’s success with his “if for no other reason that the Devil ya know is better than the twit, or Devil ya don’t.” observation.

One could then contemplate in the case of Mike B’s runoff, was it the result of policy issues or NOT enough voters having him as the "Devil ya know is better than the twit, or Devil ya don’t.”?

Not so much about his opinoin it's about his constant man crush he has on Tommy. I voted against Obama and lost. I hope I vote against Obama again and he will lose. Thats the way I see it. They never expected Tommy to be in the runoff in the first place so if Tommy loses they still had to work a few more weeks. Either way Timothy never thought Tommy had a chance thats why he drove down from Sugar Hill to repay the favor to Bootdro by knocking on doors. Thats in itself is good enough for me. Tommy Hunter for commissioner!

R...I have to give you credit...you do keep coming up with new ways to express your deep hatred of Commissioner Beaudreau

Your post is so full of pscyobabble that I almost didn't reply but it's so much fun exposing your hatred that I'm doing it anyway.

Balfour doesn't campaign...he runs and hides and trusts in name recognition. His win in SD 9 is not evidence of how great of a senator he is but rather how uninformed voters in that district are. Remember 2 years ago when he said he wasn't going to run then redecided he would and he won by roughly the same percentage. He ran and hid in that campaign big time. That was his campaign strategy. For some reason it worked too. It's a problem with people voting without being informed. Heck...the person listed alphabetically first typically gets a premium of 1 to 2% points just because they are first and uninformed people sometimes just pick the first name they see.

In addition, imho, both candidates that ran against balfour didn't run strong campaigns.

Finally, Commissioner Beaudreau does not have ethics charges pending nor will he. Get that part right. Was anyone aware that more than one of the candidates running for D3 commissioner had recent ethics violations? One even got one in late June.

Look up Mike Beaudreau's name with the ethics commission and you get Nothing...NO VIOLATIONS at all. Just another way Commissioner Beaudreau is clear and obvious leader in D3.

I'm afraid that it's all over now. By making it into the runoff, Beaudreau pretty much guaranteed reelection. The large turnout in the primary was driven by TSPLOST, and the largest component of those voters was in an anti-incumbent mood (witness the fact that a majority supported someone OTHER than the incumbent). I can't see that many people coming out a second time, and unless Beaudreau's minions get over-confident and don't show up either, it's all over. But my family will be there en masse to vote against him regardless. If nothing else, TSPLOST and Beaudreau made my generally indifferent children political creatures.

Ed...you can't vote against Mike Beaudreau...you can only vote FOR someone. Also, the turnout in the primary was not that large. 25.44% if I remember correctly. But you are correct...it is always a concern of candidates that are in Mike Beaudreau's position to get your voters back out.

Hi Floyd: It's funny that instead of answering my question, you accuse me of not answering questions. Let me ask again for you to explain my original post:

The first item listed on District 3 Commissioner Mike Beaudreau’s re-election campaign website, under “What’s Been Accomplished” is his support of the Gwinnett Chamber’s Partnership Gwinnett program. I have repeatedly asked Mike questions about taxpayer funding of the Gwinnett Chamber, and despite repeated promises to get back to me, I have not received any information from him. If Mike’s # 1 accomplishment as a commissioner is supporting the Gwinnett Chamber, you would think that he would be happy to brag about it.

Floyd: Why don't you just tell all of us where we can go to get the list of 280 new businesses the Chamber brought here, the companies that hired the 12,000 employees and how the Chamber determined that they generated $800 million of economic activity? Mike would not have given them taxpayer money unless he knew those numbers could be substantiated, right? The Chamber's attorney has sent 2 letters saying they are not subject to the open records law, but Sam Olens, Georgia's Attorney General, said they ARE. Is Mike going to insist that the Chamber comply with the law, or is he going to stand by and let the Chamber continue to hide the records of what they have done with taxpayer money?

Sabrina...you are the queen of unanswered questions...that's where the humor is.

I tried to hold back hoping against all odds that you would actually read the website and notice that there are several "What's been accomplished" entries. You're suggestion that it's his #1 thing is not founded on the website and you are making yourself look pretty darn foolish by suggesting that it is. All of those entries support the heading they are under.

Your hatred of Commissioner Beaudreau is not even thinly veiled. You have apparently grasped on to the first that came within the radius of a nuclear blast to grab and run with and again i point out to the readers here that I've been here for months and we're nearly a third into the runoff before Sabrina comes back and tries, unsuccessfully, to get something started.

The real truth here is in the facts...go look Mike on the state ethics site. What do you see? NOTHING (unlike 50% of the candidates in this race). 8 1/2 years...Not even a sniff of a violation. Grand jury investigation...result? NOTHING. People here making hysterical insinuations that he's involved in illegal activity...it comes to....wait for it....NOTHING.

It's not an accident...it's personal integrity. It's just how the man rolls.

Sorry not hate here, just governmental process issues many would rather not repeat in the future.

Gwinnett Stadium

Cell Tower

Expanding Trash fees/taxes to give small subset of seniors a break by INCREASING fees/taxes on others - instead of the county REDUCING its administrative presence to "PAY" for the benefit.

And there has been NO indication projects like this will not be repeated at this point in time, if anything there's a real chance of additions in the future.

What's Been Accomplished:

Mike has met with over 800 District 3 residents at over 85 Saturday Meetings with *Mike, held each month at different locations in the district.
*Mike accomplished his goal of getting comprehensive ethics reform passed in 2011, including greater disclosure and transparency requirements for county government.
*Mike spearheaded an initiative to allow taxpayers to go to the county website to see exactly what their individual property taxes pay for.
*County Commission meetings are now broadcast live on Gwinnett TV, and are streamed over the Internet.
*Mike brought in county Transportation department officials and outside consultants for a special meeting with homeowners affected by the Sugarloaf Parkway extension so they could get their questions answered prior to the county's approval of the project.
*A new section of the county's website offers information for homeowner's associations.
*Mike has attended over 200 community meetings and festivals to gather constituents input and feedback.
*Mike has yet to take a single financial contribution from a developer.

*Mike sponsored changes in the county's zoning regulations that prohibit vinyl siding for certain types of cluster housing, and require higher quality building materials for exteriors.
*New conservation subdivisions must now go through a planning department review and public hearing before they can be built, thanks to Mike's zoning changes.
*Mike supported the state's Fair Annexation Act, which would have limited the ability of cities to annex property that could be developed for less desirable land uses than what the county had planned.
*Mike has denied many rezoning applications in District 3 that do not conform to the county's land use plan. For example, the Lake Lucerne-Five Forks Trickum Road Gas Station, zonings off Oleander Road, West Park Place, and Grayson-New Hope Road have all been turned down.
*Mike has voted to approve overlay districts in new commercial areas in District 3, requiring higher quality buildings and improved amenities. He as worked with the Evermore Community Improvement District to improve the quality of life in the Lake Lucerne and Snellville areas.

*Mike has never voted for a tax increase during his term as commissioner.
*Mike voted against the stormwater fee that appears on residents property tax bills.
*Mike supported changes in the county's budget that reduced spending by over $200 million.
*Mike sponsored changes to development regulations requiring 100 year minimum standards and higher quality materials for storm drains, thereby saving the county money in maintenance and replacement down the road.
*Mike has voted to spend county funds on projects that will improve the quality of life for county residents, including new and improved parks, libraries, and roads, while questioning spending on projects of little or no benefit to most county residents.

In addition, you are not interested in any discussion of any issue...merely trolling a man who has conducted himself with personal integrity at all times. it hopes that if you throw enough spagetti at the wall maybe something will look like it sticked. If you were interested in a discussion you would have asked me this question months ago...you know back when all you Beaudreau haters thought Mike was in deep trouble. Now that you realize how incredibly wrong you were you are grasping at anything you can.

Sabrina, as I have said numerous times here, because of other committments I have, regrettably I am not involved in the 2012 campaign and hence do not speak for them. I am here defending a man I know very well and have seen how he conducts himself under any and all circumstances. (Like the accessible government thing you quote...what is it now...about 90 consecutive months that Mike has had Saturday office hours?) Simply stating someone was LATE to an article on the Patch, or it’s too late in an election campaign runoff cycle to ask NEW items, therefore it deserves no meaningful response is itself rather foolish, don't you think?

Mike Beaudreau is arrogant, regardless of spinmaster's defense. I have seen him roll his eyes at taxpayers who questioned why they had to pay their trash bill on their property taxes. Gee, why not put all our bills on our property taxes and then have our houses sold on the courthouse steps when we can't pay a bill.

If you were not aware of the ethics violation why were you not aware? Here’s are a few for consideration (edit as desired or required)

Do either of you see a need for (or would you support) the addition of new sports venues, concert facilities or any other expansion projects OR the redevelopment of existing “county facility assets” not directly associated with providing EMS, Law Enforcement, Gwinnett Water or Gwinnett DOT?

If you do - what would they be?

Feel free to comment on enhancements at Briscoe that support its General Aviation usage.

Do you foresee anymore “public/private partnership” projects beyond the current hotel proposal at the Gwinnett Civic Center within the next 4 years?
If yes, what would you support?

Do you foresee any additions (or deletions) to the county “core” government service categories beyond the existing items listed below:
EMS, Law Enforcement, Gwinnett Water, Gwinnett DOT or Trash Collection?
If so, what and why?

Sabrina...you have done nothing but attack and for sure and for certain have not engaged in friendly banter in the least. Furthermore, your mention of being out of town left no possible way of knowing your situation and was immediately followed by your statement about Floyd's rules which again left no way of knowing. Can't pin that one on me.

That said, early this morning I lost a friend to cancer so I will respect your situation and it will not be brought up again.

Actually Floyd, Sabrina has based her questions on document obtained through freedom of information requests she has filed with the county. She has lots of proof and simply can't understand why Beaudreau nor the Chamber will respond. Of course when you're caught red handed it's hard to plead innocence or ignorance. So they ignore the question and hope Sabrina will go away. I have news for them and you, Sabrina isn't just persistent, she's relentless.
