A Dacula man narrowly escaped injury after being struck by a truck while bicycling near Harbins Park last Saturday.

The victim said he and his wife were traveling on Indian Shoals Road near the entrance to Harbins Park on July 2 when they heard a vehicle approaching from behind and blowing its horn. According to the police report, the couple suspected something was wrong with the motorist due to the fact he began blowing the horn such a long distance away from them.

As the couple approached the entrance to the park, a pickup truck pulled alongside them. The victim said the driver, who he described as an unshaven white male 55 to 65 years of age, was “giving them the middle finger and waving his arms about.” The truck windows were rolled up and the victim could not hear what, if anything, the driver was saying.

The victim said the male continuing gesturing and travelling alongside them for a few seconds before abruptly steering to the right, striking the victim and knocking him off his bicycle. The suspect then immediately left the scene.

The victim landed in the grass on the shoulder of the roadway, but quickly remounted his bike and pursued the truck for a short distance. The victim lost sight of the suspect as he turned left off Luke Edwards Road onto Cammie Wages Road.

The victim was not injured. He said the truck struck him between the right front tire and the passenger’s mirror. According to the victim, a female passenger was also in the vehicle, but he could not provide police with a description.

The suspect vehicle is described as a maroon Dodge Ram extended cab pickup truck with a possible license plate number of GA968B or GA963B.

The incident occurred just one day after Georgia's new bicycling law went into effect. HB 101 requires motorists passing bicyclists to leave a minimum of three feet of clearance between the vehicle and the bicycle
