Burger King Admits Selling Whoppers Tainted With Horse Meat

Restaurant chain admits traces of equine DNA found at some of its processing plants in the UK and Ireland. United States supply is untainted, company says.

After initially issuing a denial, fast food chain Burger King has admitted that traces of horse meat were found at one of its European processing plants.

"The fast food chain, which has more than 500 UK outlets, had earlier given a series of ‘absolute assurances’ that its products were not involved," the Daily Mail reported.

The traces of equine DNA were found at Silvercrest, an Irish subsidiary of ABP Food Group. An investigation determined the company had been selling beef mixed with horse meat.

ABC News reports that Silvercrest provided meat to all of Burger King’s restaurants in Ireland, the U.K. and Denmark.

The chain immediately stopped using Silvercrest and switched to a different supplier, the article stated.

According to the Daily Mail, the scandal threatens to erode the confidence of UK consumers in the restaurant chain.

"Burger King has faced allegations of orchestrating a cover-up of its links to the horsemeat scandal in order to give it time to find an alternative supplier," the Daily Mail reports. "It is currently shipping in tens of thousands of burgers from suppliers in Germany and Italy in order to meet demand at its UK outlets."

In the meantime, Burger King has assured American consumers that locations in the United States are not supplied by Silvercrest.

"We have stringent and overlapping controls to ensure that the products we sell to our customers meet our strict quality standards," a company spokesperson told CNN.

I saw one headline about this that included the words "Neigh it ain't so!" I thought that was funny. Seriously though, don't you wonder what all we end up eating and never even realize?

My husband says (with such joy) the the Whopper is God's most perfect food. It has all the food groups but, only if you get it with mayo! It has vegetables- lettuce and pickles. It has meat of course. It has grains in the bun. It has the fruit- tomatoes. And it has fats-mayo ( They serve it our way which is without mayo!). The Hwy 124 store is always a pleasant stop for us, be it for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They always get high inspection scores as the store is always clean and the staff is pleasant. The manager sets the tone and that manager is one that any restaurant could learn from. We enjoyed the Perfect food last week and as usual the sandwich was hot, delicious, and looks just like the picture on the order board! I hate it when you get food that looks NOTHING like the picture they have posted. It came out with a smile and a "Good to see you!" comment. While I try to eat fish and chicken 80% of the time, when I do fall off the heart wagon it tends to be for a Whopper.
