Georgia to Issue Driver's Licenses to Immigrants on Deferred Status
The state of Georgia is reported to be issuing licenses to immigrants qualifying for deferred status under the president's new directive. Do you believe this is the right step for the state to be taking?
With a directive from President Barack Obama requiring deferred action in certain cases related to illegal immigration, Georgia and other states have been left in a quandary on what to do about driver’s licenses.
Under the president’s new policy that went into effect last week, under certain conditions some immigrants are no longer considered illegal. This directive applies to immigrants who arrived in the U.S. before they turned 16, are under 30 or younger, have lived in the U.S. for at least five years and are in school, have graduated or served in the military. A problem, however, arises with regard to driver's licenses. The new directive leaves them legally in the country, but not legally allowed to drive.
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Georgia’s Republican Attorney General Sam Olens, has decided the best way around it is to issue temporary driver’s licenses in these cases. Olens is reported to have issued a statement saying that while he doesn’t agree with the president’s actions, Georgia would recognize someone with an approved deferred status as being eligible for a temporary license. He did, however, say this status would not make them eligible for a state identification card.
According to the AJC story, it’s not just the young illegal immigrants who qualify for deferred status. Federal immigration authorities can also grant this action to others at their discretion.
Gov. Jan Brewer, on the other hand, reportedly issued a directive in the state of Arizona instructing agencies not to issue driver's licenses or benefits to anyone under a deferred immigration status. She did this last week as soon as the directive went into effect.
So do you think Georgia has made the right decision to grant licenses or should it follow Arizona’s example? Tell us in comments.

Jeff, first of all, I strongly take offense to you referring to President Obama as "our idiot president". Your post should be removed for violating Patch's Terms of Use standards.
I commend Attorney General Olens for following the law, instead of his political leanings. I have no problem with issuing driver's licenses to the folks who fall under President Obama's directive.

I agree. Jan Brewer has been a true leader in regard to this subject. When you think about how many accidents happen and which people do not seem to carry insurance, I am opposed to giving out a license. It is a license to give jobs to deferred people instead of citizens because now they can drive easily. I hope the new license will spell out in large letters not eligible to vote.

As we all know, the only TRUE Americans are the Native Americans or American Indians, who as a matter of fact, sadly, do not have half of the benefits that all other Immigrant Americans have. My two favorite quotation by two well known Republicans:
I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming,” said Jon Huntsman, the former Utah governor, during his ill-fated run for his party’s presidential nomination. “Call me crazy.”
And in an on-air plea for sanity, Joe Scarborough, the former G.O.P. congressman and MSNBC host, said, “I’m just tired of the Republican Party being the stupid party.” I feel for him. But don’t expect the reality chorus to grow. For if intelligence were contagious, his party would be giving out vaccines for it.

And of COURSE, first produce ALL the documentation the citizens that live here in the state must. But if they really do that, they can’t be called the “undocumented” any longer can they?
The executive order has been used by both parties to influence FEDERAL operations in the past. But this may be the first time that a VERBALLY communicated "policy" that hasn’t even been issued in writing AS an Executive Order dictates STATE actions to such a degree. (Care to point out any others I really want to know)
This example may be the best indicator yet that DHS needs to be disbanded now for the sake our own country, REGARDLESS of who occupies the Whitehouse next.
Border policy has been in place since at least 1908, if it only takes a verbal “statement” to reverse a portion or all of it, then there are a quite few of our former leaders that just didn’t know what they were doing.
That must have been due to all the focus on what the definition of “is” is…
When a FEDERAL non-exec order clearly ATTEMPTS to force states to grant privileges to a class of persons that by law it CLEARLY acknowledges to all SHOULDN’T be here to receive them by the very permit it grants - do we really have local control?
Or are licenses now a FEDERALLY provided entitlement with NO questions asked?
The governor could always reject this outright in a fight or at least SLOW ROLL any actions. Government has ALWAYS been good at moving ever so SLOWLY…

There is no if and there is nothing for it to go thru!
The policy is that of Barrack Obama breaking the law. The constitution does not allow the Executive branch to bypass congress and make it's own laws. Once again Obama is ignoring the constitution to do his own thing and in this case it is simply to gain Latino votes. Obama is doing everything in his power to Transform The United States Of America. If he is re-elected, this nonsense will become an everyday event. And people wonder why Conservatives are so concerned about this election.

I think we should license them all. Not to make them legal but to make them purchase insurance, tags and contribute to the economy, since they are here. This is a complex problem as many are married to US citizens and have children that are mothered by US citizens and belong in the states. They need to be able to live. I hear a lot about how they drain our resources and I am sure this is true, but not every illegal drains resources. Many just try to survive and keep a low profile. Some pay taxes but get nothing for the effort.

Apparently we don’t need laws anymore, just a president’s STATEMENT. Saves a lot of cash by eliminating both the Senate/Congress and the Supreme Court too. No laws, no NEED for a court right?
As to giving a license to them all.
This takes us right back to the GA has sanctuary cities mindset.
We TRIED that route before and the insurance companies were “all for it”.
Problem was, this set of folks has NO incentive to MAINTAIN insurance coverage. It’s basically called the “Clip and SKIP”.
Thousands of your very own neighbors and their families have ALREADY been harmed by this approach.
Besides, having this conversation in the first place assumes our President, NO.. strike that, the head of DHS is really acting within HER powers to carry out this decree. “Appears” to being doing so is a FAR cry from having PROVEN to be doing so.
It’s time for the states to press back if the FEDs won’t do their jobs, won’t allow the states to do it in the vacuum the FEDS leave, it’s just a bridge too far to allow the FEDS to ORDER states to violate their OWN laws based on "policy" that’s NOT even recorded as an executive order.
YES I’d have the same reaction if this nightmare came from Mitt Romney.

Georgia is following the State's law. According to DDC's new policies for required/valid documentation to obtain a driver's license, anyone who has been given a work permit and has a social security number can obtain a driver's license. It is very clear to me. Those who receive a work permit are legal in the country for a period of 2 years, and therefore, should be able to get a driver's license for the duration of such documentation.

I personally am so offended by the whole situation. I'm sorry, but if they are illegal, they should be made to go home (the WHOLE family), and legally apply to come here and go through the legal channels that most of the people that have come to this country legally have had to go through.
IF they are going to be here, they should speak passable ENGLISH, English is the recognized language for America. We should not be giving them tests, or teaching them in school in any language other than English.
If we could start cutting off food stamps, schooling and other services for illegals then maybe they would go home and apply to come back legally.
Just my opinion.

I may be wrong, but aren't the above described people already US citizens? I believe the "chosen one's" directive applies to people in a certain age group who came hear illegally with their parents, rather than people who were born here.
In any case, I would vote yes to taking down all Spanish signs, removing Spanish options from phone cues and making all immigrants follow the rules that legitimate immigrants have to adhere to. Ship all illegals back to where ever they came from (including Obama's uncle, Onyango Obama).

Without getting into opinions of illegals etc... I have to say that my biggest concern is how often the president can override congress and the rule of law way of doing things. If he is allowed to do this, and it become a precedent, then we get a dictator in the high office, what is to stop that person from "ruling" the people and taking over? there won't anything we can do. Jan Brewer has every reason to do the things she does. She is PROTECTING her people which is her job. My son, when he got out of the Army, lived in Ft. Hood. He has considered moving close to the border, but declined since there were so many "kidnappings" of blonde haired blued eyed little girls. Drugs, kidnappings...then those people get into our country undocumented and commit crimes here? trying to figure out why people defend our not protecting our borders and insisting that people enter here the correct way?????? I hate it for poor families that want to come here and live our American way, but as long as the bad guys can come here, it has to be this way. I always wondered why we didn't have some kind of policy with Mexico and insist that they straighten out their country for their people so that people wouldn't need to come here in droves?

Whatever you call it, R, the President has the authority to take the action he did. If he didn't, he wouldn't have. Just because you and your cohorts don't like it, that doesn't mean it's illegal. You all have your knickers in a twist over something that likely won't affect you personally. How much would it cost to deport the 11 million illegals (that # according to a know-it-all on another thread, not my figure). Can you begin to grasp the cost of moving that many people from all corners and center of this country to wherever you think they belong? Do you want to pay for that? If it came to happen, what if the country or countries you're sending them to refuses to accept them? You gonna put them on an uninhabited island somewhere? Or islands, 'cause that's a whole lotta people. And develop it, too? At what further cost? Be realistic. Be humane, first, and then you will be realistic.

A claim that the President has authority to mandate an agency NOT to enforce laws is the heart of the whole problem...

Jeff and R: He has been a very busy guy. And, he's not on your timetable. He has the Hispanic vote, even though Romney has a Mexican-born father and lots of Mexican cousins. That's just the way it is. He didn't need to do this for their votes. Here's a little light reading for you:
"Executive Orders are legally binding orders given by the President, who as the head of the government is also the head of all federal agencies, allowing him to direct those agencies on how to exercise their policies. In this case, the President directed the Department of Homeland Security to stop the deportation of younger undocumented immigrants (under 30), even though Congress has twice refused to pass the DREAM Act." from the Washington Times Communities.

That, of course, does not make it right, but what choice are we being given? Once again, we are being forced to choose between the least of two evils, whoever we think that might be. Anyone who wonders why Governor Romney and the Republican Party does so poorly with Hispanic voters need only to read the comments on this page. The Republican Party is making great efforts in the upcoming convention to portray itself as an inclusive party. Unfortunately, those valiant efforts are severely undercut by the comments from the conservative base of the Republican Party regarding undocumented immigrants.
R++ - One of the famous "Dacula Crew"

it IS inclusive and the issue with illegals is NOT race related, it spans all types because "illegal" is an independent choice made by each and every person that CHOOSES to remain that way even including immediate family.
WHY should these law breakers take precedence?
They apparently make this choice simply because in their OWN mind - it costs THEM too much to follow legal channels, even while millions of others immigrate in a compliant fashion every YEAR.

So since SS agents weren’t cited under Bush administration for NOT paying the hookers, President Obama gets to claim it!

I agree with the first post, which I might add is posted pursuant to what we in America who are true Americans call our 1st Amendment Rights: Our president is an idiot and that's putting it mildly,

All freedom requires responsibility. That can be applied to each and every conversation anyone has on freedom. The bible says, you will know the truth and it will set you free. You are not free (in that sense) until you "apply" the knowlege. Same here. freedom doesn't mean willy nilly, anything goes. We are to call one another to account. That has nothing to do with love and acceptance. I love every man, woman and child, but doesn't mean I will let someone who will harm my family into my home. I still love them, but they can't come near me and mine until they change something. We must be a nation of laws (propose being to keep us safe) or we will perish.

All of you that are against the people that have gotten a deferred action work permit, are all just plain ignorant! You all are immigrants here! Unless you are part native! So stop barging on the people that like your ancestors, have comes here to make a difference! Some have been here since they were babies! They have grown up here! This is the only country they know! So why not stop being ignorant pieces of crap and actually see that they help you all. I never see some "American" working out in the sun from dawn to sunset! So stop! Just stop saying that the president is stupid! He sees the truth that others are too blind to see! I am freaking 16 years old and I've had to grow up in this country where people only care about a paper than the ability to do something right! So stop discriminating!

"............have comes here to make a difference!" May I assume this is Vanessa Williams?
The difference, Vanessa Darling, is that our relatives fought wars, for years, gave their lives, met requirements, some even endured slavery for us to be here.
The ones you speak of just jumped a fence, that's all.
Totally different genetic and moral make-up Sweet-heart.

Listen darling... Not all Latinos have jumped fences! Some have came here and actually follow laws! Some pay taxes, pay insurance, and left the place of birth for the reason that their home has becomes a dangerous place. No offense intended but if I may recall the ones who had to go through slavery were colored skin people not whites. You people killed the original owners of this land... I don't see any difference with the discrimination done ages years ago towards black with the one being done now. Sure we don't get treated as slaves but trust me we get treated as If my kind was some kind of trash.

You will find, sweet girl, that you will "get treated" just as you behave. If you want to be treated like a decent citizen, you must act like one and be responsible. My wife's grandmother is a Cherokee and I hold most Native Americans in very high-esteem. One of my best friends on this Earth is Cheyenne, descended from the Dog Soldiers, and I look up to him, an awesome man, not because he is Cheyenne, but because he is part of this Earth's cure, rather than part of the disease. He looks at reservations much as most look at housing projects and other entitlements, with disdain. These government institutions are killing the red and black man, rather than saving them.

Darling
Legal immigrants come by the millions and do all you claim, but they come though the front door with respect of self and others, pride in what they stand for and ready to work for the betterment of all.
"illegal immigration", well that's the gimme mentality on display, claiming I need special treatment! Its too hard!!! We DEMAND you give us everything because we are entitled to it - how are we entitled? Simply because we breathe.
Even though millions do it the right way every day that the sun rises...
These illegals just plan on finding fools lazier than they are and desperately hope that those useful idiots don't wake-up until it's just too late...
Yes, gentle readers, why its true that some illegals "do the jobs that others won't do", like an impersonation of a swarm of locusts, devouring the assets, then MOVING on...
Why even the Borg would be proud.
Finally, Illegal immigration isn't just about Latinos - lots of nationalities are involved, sad but true - even if that shocks the self-proclaimed progressives and the LaRaza types out there...
Unleashed by one who travels the world with spare limousines in his pocket ....

No one, absolutely no one, deserves automatic respect. It must be earned. I will respect Obama when he voluntarily resigns. He has done Black America a huge disservice by simultaneously being our first Black President and our worst President ever.
We are a nation now more divided than ever, squabbling over issues the government shouldn't be involved with anyway, while the private party in DC, both Republican AND Democrat, goes on and on and on.
What fools we have become. The government is out of control and has become so complex, there are no easy fixes, except the axe.

"No one, absolutely no one, deserves automatic respect. It must be earned." Racer X, your statement is diametrically opposed to what the Bible teaches.

David, I completely agree with you. I believe the exact opposite of what Racer X has espoused. Everyone, absolutely everyone, deserves respect. As Mother Teresa, one of my heroes, simply stated: "I see God in every human being. When I wash the leper's wounds, I feel I am nursing the Lord himself. Is it not a beautiful experience?" Have charity toward each other (whoever they are, whatever their condition, regardless of their views) on this website and in life, and you will find peace. And, you might even find that others are more willing to listen to you.
