Group in Colorado Argues Pot is Safer than Alcohol; Is It?

The group encourages starting a national conversation on the topic.

The state of Colorado will vote in November whether or not to legalize marijuana for recreational use.  It is already legal for medicinal use.

The Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol has used billboards and other types of advertising to promote their message, according to a report by CNN.  The marketing campaign aims to "break down the stereotype about who the typical marijuana user is," explained the campaign's co-director, Mason Tvert to CNN.

"Most of them are professional, hard-working people," he said.

The billboards, radio and TV ads feature people from different walks of life discussing why they smoke marijuana and how it is a better choice than alcohol.

But is it?

Opponents of the measure debate whether the revenue raised by legalizing and taxing marijuana would really have much of an economic impact.  Others question if there would be enough regulation and oversight to prevent it from becoming abused or readily available to minors.

If using marijuana for recreational purposes becomes legal in Colorado, the vote will more than likely come to the rest of the states as well.

Is marijuana safer than alcohol?

Yes, check the science, it's there in black & white for anyone who cares to do the research! Marijuana has no LD 50 and is safer than ANY prescription or OTC drug on the current market.

Not to advocate smoking, but compared to many perscription drugs it is very safe. Watching my Grandparents over the years take pain killers and drink their evening beverage to numb the aches of old age, we have a strange ideal about marijuana. It sure cost us alot to house the dealers and users. Money better spent for arthritis and cancer research. Taking over the counter sleep med's is more dangerous!

At what point did you begin to believe money saved from not housing criminals would be spent on arthritis and cancer research?

Is there anyone out there that disagrees? I can't imagine an argument to the contrary with all the research at your "Google" fingertips!

RE: " Others question if there would be enough regulation and oversight to prevent it from becoming abused or readily available to minors"

I do not believe there is any oversight at this point & certainly current regulations are not stopping it's availability. The anti Marajuana laws are as effective as was the 18th Ammendment was

I'm trying to find whatever research is out there on this topic because I'm curious about the difference. I found a Psychology Today post (http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/your-brain-food/201012/alcohol-vs-marijuana-in-the-brain) with a little info, but not enough. If anyone else finds something interesting from an unbiased, reputable source (if that exists) please share!

Is anyone aware of the reality of delirium tremens? A drunk can literally die from withdrawals without appropriate medical supervision.

For crying out loud, every year more people fall victim to death from vending machines falling on them than have ever suffered death directly caused by cannabis in the entire recorded history of mankind.

Good article from a highly reputable source (American Scientist) showing marijuana is next to impossible to OD on and at least 100 times safer than alcohol in that regard...... http://www.americanscientist.org/issues/pub/the-toxicity-of-recreational-drugs/4
