Hanukkah 'Christmas' Tree Ornament
When my daughter was in kindergarten, they did a variety of "winter holiday" crafts and activities. One of the activities for Hanukkah was making the above glittery Star of David. My daughter brought it home and proudly presented her Hanukkah Christmas tree ornament. I realize kindergarten learning about the various "winter holidays" would not include any in-depth study of Christianity or Judaism, but this was just plain funny to me. Hanukkah was not the only "winter holiday" that caused my daughter a little bit of confusion. That was the same year she referred to some chocolate coins she got in her stocking as "Kwanzas." I am still not sure if they discussed Kwanzaa the holiday and Kwanza the currency in class and she tied the two together or if she just thought there was a "winter holiday" associated with Angolan currency.

I usually put up two Christmas trees -- an upstairs formal one with white lights and the downstairs fun one with colored lights. Between the two of them, I have dozens of ornaments with stories and memories behind them.

For example, I have an ornament on my tree that was given to me by my high school Spanish teacher. That ornament has been on my tree every year since she gave it to me in ninth grade (which was longer ago than I care to admit). She was a very special lady and the world is a less bright place without her in it.

I also have several ornaments my mother made before I was even born (those are definitely older than I care to admit). They are beautiful satin balls covered with jewelry, beads and sequins. They are important to me because my mother made them and they hold memories of every childhood Christmas.

Naturally I also have several ornaments my children have made over the years. Hopefully my son will not be offended, but the ornament pictured above is one my daughter made in kindergarten. The irony of it amuses me greatly.

I have an ornament that my son, Jake made in 1st grade. I love it. Now that he is 17, it makes me realize how precious those little moments were with him. I also have frame ornaments, with pictures of my children and Santa. I love to see how they have grown. But I must admit, it makes me a little sad.
