Mill Creek Student Assaults Coach, Strips Naked
Student reportedly began acting strangely during baseball conditioning workout.
A Mill Creek High School sophomore was taken into custody Jan. 9 after he assaulted a coach while “acting strangely.”
The student was working out with the baseball team on the first day of conditioning practice when he “became demented,” according to the report written by the school resource officer.
The student allegedly climbed the bleachers and began doing calisthenics in his underwear. He also reportedly scraped his legs after sliding around in gravel.
When team coaches attempted to determine what was wrong, the student gave “incoherent and nonsensical” answers. Coaches escorted the student inside the baseball field house. Once inside, the student allegedly stripped naked and tried to run out of the building before being stopped by several coaches. According to the report, the student punched one of the coaches in the mouth. The coach sustained minor injuries, said Jorge Quintana, director of media relations for Gwinnett County Public Schools.
The school resource officer arrived and placed the student in handcuffs. The student’s father came to the scene, but was reportedly unable to make sense of what his son was saying. Gwinnett County Police, who had been called to assist, requested an ambulance. The student was subsequently transported to the hospital for evaluation. The cause of the student's behavior and his current condition is not known. Quintana also could not comment regarding whether or not the student has returned to school.
“Attendance is considered private information especially if related to discipline,” Quintana wrote in an emailed response to questions.
Quintana said juvenile charges of reckless conduct, simple battery, public indecency and disorderly conduct are pending depending upon the action taken by the school disciplinary panel.
