This Week in Sports: Jan. 17-22

Local teams will be back in action after weeklong break.

Last week’s snowfall forced the cancellation of nearly all local sporting events. The Mill Creek swim and dive team held a meet on Saturday, but most other teams were forced to cancel due to icy conditions on roadways and school campuses. With better weather forecast for this week, area teams will be back in action. Here’s a look at a few of the sporting events scheduled for this week:

1.     Dacula vs. Grayson

The Falcons travel to the home of the Rams on Tuesday for an 8-AAAAA matchup. The Dacula boys (8-6, 4-2) are currently third in the region. The Falcons have had a week to recover from a tough region loss to South Gwinnett and will be looking to prevent last place Grayson (3-11, 0-7) from achieving their first region win.

The Dacula girls (4-12, 3-4) are also coming off a tough loss to South Gwinnett and will attempt to keep the struggling Lady Rams (1-13, 0-6) winless in 8-AAAAA.

Girls tipoff at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.

2.     Mill Creek vs. Mountain View

This Saturday, Jan. 22, Mill Creek will play host to Mountain View. Now in only their second season of play, the Mountain View boys’ (3-11, 0-4) and girls’ (2-12, 0-4) basketball teams remain winless in region 7-AAAAA. It will be up to the Hawks to keep the Bears from picking up critical region wins. The Lady Hawks (6-5, 1-2) tipoff at 4 p.m. The Mill Creek boys (9-4, 2-2) hit the court at 5:30 p.m.

3.     MCHS tri-meet vs. Lanier and Mountain View

In their last tri-meet, the Mill Creek wrestling team picked up a big win against South Gwinnett and Newton. Though the Hawks followed that win with a disappointing performance at the area duals, the team will be looking to regain momentum at Wednesday’s tri-meet. The Hawks hit the mats at 5:30 p.m. at Mountain View.

4.     Falcons head to Wildcat Rumble

This weekend, the Dacula wrestling team will travel to Lovejoy High School for the Wildcat Rumble. The two-day meet will give the Falcons a chance to rebound from a lackluster outing at the area meet. The Clayton County meet will feature 24 teams including Charles Drew, Columbia, Creekview, Harris County, Jonesboro, Langston Hughes, Lovejoy, McNair, MLK, Morrow, Mt. Zion, Mundy`s Mill, North Clayton, Pebblebrook, Redan, Riverdale, Sandy Creek, Shiloh, Southwest Dekalb, Stephenson, Stone Mountain, Tucker and Westlake.

5.     Gwinnett County Diving Invitational

The Mill Creek divers will be in action Saturday at the Gwinnett County Diving Invitational at Mountain Park Aquatic Center. The meet will serve as preparation for next week’s county diving championships. The action begins at 4 p.m.
