Tragic Accident Claims Life of Auburn Toddler
Aunt was pulling vehicle into the garage when she accidentally ran over 2-year-old child.
Gwinnett County Police have identified the 2-year-old victim of Wednesday’s fatal accident in Auburn.
Dior Lavalais was accidentally struck as her aunt, Adelicia Zenon, was pulling a vehicle into the garage at the family’s Talon View Court home.
According to the police report, Zenon and several family members, including the 2-year-old victim, had been out running errands. When the family returned to the residence, Zenon stopped the vehicle, a 2007 Mercury Milan, in the driveway to allow two of the occupants to exit. Zenon said she thought her young son and Lavalais were both still in the vehicle.
As Zenon pulled the car forward, she said she felt a bump that she thought was the raised portion of the garage entrance. The child’s mother came to the garage door and asked Zenon where Lavalais was. At that point, Zenon realized Lavalais was not in the back seat. Zenon exited the car and found the child under the vehicle.
Zenon took Lavalais inside and asked a relative to call 911. Zenon and her mother subsequently decided they could get the child help faster if they drove toward Dacula. Police and emergency medical services personnel met Zenon, Zenon’s mother and Lavalais near the intersection of Fence Road and Gran Heritage Way in Dacula.
Lavalais was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident.
No charges were filed and the case has been closed.
