Key to Success: Mill Creek High School senior Tyler Cierski has been an all-around iron man for the Hawks’ athletic program over his years at Mill Creek. The Hawks’ starting fullback helped lead the team this season to the third round of the playoffs after a huge win over South Gwinnett High School. Looking back at his senior season, Cierski said the win over the Comets is his favorite memory from his high school football career.

“It’s the farthest we’ve gone in school history in the playoffs,” he said. “We won that game and made it to the third round of the playoffs. Before that we had only been the first round.”

Cierski’s football accomplishments have earned him a scholarship to the University of Maryland, where he will be lining up at fullback for the Terrapins. Cierski said he chose Maryland because of its high quality program and the close proximity of his extended family.

“I went there a few times and liked the campus a lot,” he said. “I also really liked the coaching staff. I have family up there and my parents lived there. My mom’s sister lives there and her aunt lives about 20 minutes from campus.”

In addition to football, Cierski is also a dominant force for the Hawks on the track and field team. Cierski throws discus and shot put and has shown just how talented he is in that sport as well, setting a school record in the discus throw. He has also competed in weightlifting competitions for the Hawks and says if the opportunity arises in college, he would like to continue his participation in those sports.

Off the field, Cierski says his favorite classes have always been in the science department. Though he said he has initially been interested in sports science, he is also heavily contemplating studying biology.

“This year in high school I’ve been taking a microbiology class and that was very interesting,” he said. “I’m definitely looking toward some kind of science, I’m not sure what kind yet, if it will biology, microbiology, or kinesiology, but definitely something in that area.”
