Severe Weather, Then Cooler Toward End of the Week

We had a close call last Friday with the system that brought ice to parts of north Georgia. But what's the saying, close is only good with horseshoes and hand grenades?

It looks like severe weather will be coming to our area on Wednesday. This is going to primarily be a wind and rain event, although a quick spin up tornado is not out of the question. An upper low that is currently over the southwest US is expected to advance east through the day on Tuesday. The upper level jet at both 200 mb and 300 mb are expected to line up (see the 200mb, 300mb, and 500mb maps above) and combine to bring a portion of those winds toward the surface, both in advance of the squall line and during it's passage. There will be quite a gradient as the system approaches, and winds in advance of the actual rain could be quite strong. Combine those winds with the still moist soil, and you have a recipe for considerable damage. Huntsville NWS had this to say about the winds:

THE OBVIOUS THREAT WITH THIS EVENT WILL BE WIDESPREAD DAMAGING WINDS
(WHICH MAY REACH/EXCEED 70MPH), WITH LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL A CLOSE
SECOND. PWATS OF 1.6" ARE BETWEEN THE 99TH PERCENTILE AND RECORD
VALUES FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR. THOUGH THE LINE WILL BE MOVING RAPIDLY
ACROSS THE AREA, IT WILL PRODUCE VERY HEAVY RAINFALL AMOUNTS IN A
SHORT PERIOD OF TIME (UPWARDS OF AN INCH IN 30 MINS OR LESS ARE
LIKELY), SO THIS MAY BRIEFLY LEAD TO PONDING OF WATER ON AREA
ROADWAYS. NO WIDESPREAD FLOODING ISSUES ARE EXPECTED, BUT THIS WILL
BE SOMETHING TO WATCH IF THE SYSTEM SLOWS DOWN.

The models have picked up the pace for this system and it now appears it will arrive here very late tonight or in the morning on Wednesday. There will be heavy rain accompanying this system with the HPC showing as much as two inches over portions of north Georgia. Once again like last Friday, we were stuck in the wedge and kept our temperatures in the 40s for most of the day on Monday. Today will be a different story with warm moist gulf air, from the surface to the mid levels of the atmosphere. Temperatures could hit 70 here depending on the sunshine or lack of.

Colder air returns after the frontal passage with highs on Thursday only in the 40s again. There is a chance that Thursday night/early Friday, parts of north Georgia could see a few flurries, as well as again Saturday night which might be a better chance. None of these are major events and may end up passing to our north again.

We're going to be in for a roller coaster ride for February with cold periods intermingled with warm-ups, and there are signs that March may end up as the coldest month of the winter. I'll have more on this in a new post.

A little more about the potential winds for Thursday night/Wednesday from the Atlanta NWS. Note, those 925mb winds are JUST above the surface. 5 standard deviations is a LOT.

AS FAR AS THE SEVERE POTENTIAL...WOULD STILL LOOK LIKE A
BORDERLINE EVENT IF NOT FOR EXTREME 925MB WINDS PROJECTED. 50 TO
55 KT WINDS AT THIS LEVEL PUT IT A FULL 5 STANDARD DEVIATIONS FROM
THE NORM MAKING THIS A HIGHLY ANOMALOUS EVENT. THIS WOULD MAKE
CAPE FOR THIS EVENT LARGELY IRRELEVANT AS EVEN SHRA ACTIVITY
WOULD BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING THE MOMENTUM TRANSPORT NEEDED TO BRING WINDS TO SURFACE. EVEN WITH THAT SAID...NAM12 STILL PRODUCES A HEALTHY AMOUNT OF INSTABILITY WITH 1000 J/KG FOR WEST CENTRAL GEORGIA. FEEL THIS MAY BE OVERDONE AS IT IS MAINLY IN AFTERNOON AND COUNTING ON A FASTER PROGRESSION AT THIS POINT WHICH WOULD RESULT IN LOWER VALUES. WILL PLAY UP THE FACT IN HWO THAT GRADIENT WINDS WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WINDS LATE TUESDAY NIGHT AND CERTAINLY WED WITH THE SHOWER ACTIVITY. WILL ALSO HAVE HIGH WIND WATCH FOR THE MOUNTAINS FOR THIS EVENT.

I hate to keep emphasizing the wind threat but we're talking serious winds. More from Birmingham this morning:

ONE DISTINCT CHANGE HAS OCCURRED THIS MORNING FROM
YESTERDAY. GUIDANCE HAS INCREASED INSTABILITIES ACROSS THE BOARD IN
THE 06Z TO 12Z TIME FRAME AHEAD OF THE PRE-FRONTAL TROUGH IN EASTERN MISSISSIPPI AND CENTRAL ALABAMA. THE INSTABILITY INCREASE IS
CONCERNING...AS IT NARROWS THAT FINE LINE BETWEEN BEING ABLE TO
PRODUCE A SUPERCELL ENVIRONMENT AS OPPOSED TO A QLCS
ENVIRONMENT.

The concern is instead of a line of thunderstorms, these could become distinct supercells.

From James Spann in Alabama:

"As discussed here for several days, the primary threat remains damaging straight line winds along the QLCS (quasi linear convective system). The low level jet (around 5,000 feet) is screaming, with winds of over 75 knots, and it won’t take much to transfer that down to the surface. If your county comes under a severe thunderstorm warning, you will need to take it seriously. In fact, with this kind of setup I would take it like a tornado warning since there is potential for widespread damaging winds that exceed 75 mph along the line, which will knock down many trees and power lines, and have the potential to create some structural damage. Not sure I would want to be in a mobile home as this line comes through… just something to think about."

timing for us now looks like after noon tomorrow, which is not good, it allows more heat to build before the system arrives.

I'm beginning to have a little concern about the severe weather tomorrow.
The threat of tornadoes has been down played over the last few days, but
it's beginning to look like more and more of a threat. The latest models
are indicating increased instability in addition to the blazing low level
winds. Winds at these lower levels will be running 4 standard deviations
above normal with winds at 2500 feet of 65 mph. Folks, that's getting close
to ground level. Any storms that come through will EASILY tap into that
wind and bring it down to the surface.

Even though no tornado may form, the winds from this system may still reach
tornadic strength and cause significant damage. And now, the worst part of
it all. This line of storms will be coming through around noon tomorrow,
the worst time for schools. Make sure everyone you know understands what to do and
where to go in case of a tornado.

Rainfall amounts have been upgraded for us to almost 3" of rain, all within
a very short time span. Precipitable water values will be running 4-5
standard deviations high for this time of year so there will be plenty of
moisture for heavy rain. Flash flooding will be a possibility.

This will be a very dangerous situation tomorrow and everyone should stay
alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.

This from Birmingham NWS, remember, generally what they get comes this way.

THE COMPUTER MODELS ARE SLOWING DOWN THE ARRIVAL TIME OF THE MAIN
SQUALL LINE INTO ALABAMA. CONFIDENCE IS DECREASING FOR A FAST
MOVING SQUALL LINE/HIGH WIND EVENT...AND INCREASING FOR THE
POSSIBILITY OF DISCRETE CELLS AHEAD OF THE MAIN SQUALL LINE.

THE TORNADO CONFIDENCE HAS BEEN RAISED TO MODERATE ON THE SEVERE THREAT LEVEL MAP ON OUR WEB SITE.

THE MODELS ARE ALSO TRENDING TOWARDS A RE-INTENSIFICATION OF THE SQUALL LINE AS IT MOVES INTO EAST ALABAMA DURING THE LATE MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS.

We don't want a slow moving system, and we don't want discrete cells, the tornado probabilities go up dramatically in a setup like this. Also notice, as it moves into east Alabama what happens, the models show it strengthening as it enters Georgia.

More to come...

James Spann in Alabama made this comment earlier:

"Any discrete cells that form ahead of the main line will have the potential to produce a tornado, as there will be a high degree of storm relative helicity (veering of the wind with altitude in relation to storm motion) in place, and the air will be pretty unstable for late January (surface based CAPE values over 500 j/kg)"

Hence the reason we don't want slow moving anything...

825 PM EST TUE JAN 29 2013

.UPDATE...
THE LATEST 18Z MODEL RUNS HAVE INCREASED CONCERNS FOR STRONG
GRADIENT WINDS OCCURRING ACROSS MUCH OF THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST GEORGIA ON WEDNESDAY. HAVE DECIDED TO PLAY IT SAFE AND ADD PICKENS AND MURRAY COUNTIES TO THE HIGH WIND WARNING DUE TO THE HIGHER PEAKS LOCATED IN THOSE COUNTIES. CONFIDENCE IS ALSO INCREASING THAT MOST OF NORTH GEORGIA WILL SEE AT LEAST 1.5 TO 2.0 INCHES OF RAINFALL WITH ISOLATED HIGHER AMOUNTS LIKELY. FOR THIS REASON... THE FLOOD WATCH HAS BEEN EXPANDED FURTHER WESTWARD TO INCLUDE NORTHWEST GEORGIA WHERE GROUNDS REMAIN SATURATED AND NUMEROUS CREEKS AND STREAMS EXPERIENCED FLOODING JUST RECENTLY. OTHERWISE... THE CURRENT FORECAST LOOKS ON TRACK WITH RADAR SHOWING PATCHES OF LIGHT RAIN MOVING ACROSS PARTS OF NORTH GEORGIA THIS EVENING. THIS TREND WILL CONTINUE WARRANTING A SLIGHT CHANCE POP UNTIL EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING WHEN RAIN CHANCES INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY AHEAD OF OUR NEXT MUCH ADVERTISED WEATHER SYSTEM.

Temperatures this morning are in the mid 60's across our area with dew points already at 60 degrees. As the day progresses and we get more heat, the atmosphere will destabilize even further and peak around the time the storms will be here.

There are already storms breaking out ahead of the main line, and these discrete cells are the ones to be concerned about as the day goes on. As you can see from above, the main line will be here around 3pm, but other storms will begin arriving shortly.

Keep a weather radio or other warning device handy today, it may start to get rough a little later.

NGW, excellent severe weather reporting Wednesday. You really kept me busy in staying abreast of the bad weather coming our way via your updates on Dacula Patch. Trust Kristi gave you an "atta boy." It was like being in the ring with a fine tuned middleweight in that you were throwing those weather punches right and left. Not exactly sure of the time but the heavy rain and winds didn't hit over our way until late Wednesday afternoon. Not exactly sure of the time. Do you know the amount of rainfall we got out our way? In closing, Thank YOU for your usual great job of weather updates throughout the day.
