Gavin Sondak is the kind of player that every coach wants on his team. Sondak plays third base, first base and pitcher for the Mill Creek 10U Hawks baseball team. His coach, Andy Mitchell, says that it is his baseball instincts that set him apart from the crowd. “He is able to anticipate the play and react accordingly,” Mitchell said. “He has been a great addition to our Mill Creek 10U team with big bat, fielding and pitching ability.”  For the last three years, Sondak played travel baseball out of Dacula Park. Dacula High School cross country runner Colby Mosshart recently led his team at the Berry Invitational with a finish time of 17:39. This outstanding performance, and his continued motivation to improve, is what makes Mosshart this week’s Dacula Patch male athlete of the week. Coach Chad Harrison said Mosshart is a four-year letterman who has been a member of the state team since he was a freshman. “He is a hard worker who pushes himself and other runners to get better with every practice,” Harrison said. Mill Creek High School Cross Country runner, Eric Westog’s attitude makes him a true winner both on and off the field. “Eric has a determined and committed attitude towards all things in life,” Coach Andy Christie said. “He is not willing to settle for anything less than his best. He's a great person to have on our team." Recently, Westog helped make history with his winning attitude and determination. “He placed 12th at the Berry Invitational [Sept. 3] out of 504 runners,” Christie said. “His time was 16:30, and he helped our team place third, our best finish at the meet in school history.” …
Kelsey Griffin had a defensive game to remember last week for the Mill Creek Hawks in a 35-7 win over Alpharetta. The Hawks jumped out to a 28-0 lead and it was Griffin, a defensive lineman, who helped establish the tone. He had four tackles, one assist, one tackle for loss, three quarterback hurries, one caused fumble and one recovered fumble. Senior John Russ accounted for 341 yards of the 414 yards of offense by the Mill Creek Hawks in their 35-27 victory over rival Dacula Falcons. Russ went 16-27 for 310 yards with two touchdowns and had 10 carries for 31 more yards. His touchdown with 1:03 left sealed the victory for the Hawks, who lost a heartbreaker last year after leading in that game. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: ROCKY CAPOBIANCO Dacula Falcons junior running back Rocky Capobianco played quarterback for two years under coach Kevin Maloof. Now that Jared Zito has taken over, Capobianco has moved to running back to allow the elusive Brandon Goodson a turn at quarterback. Capobianco had a good first game with 14 carries and 63 yards on offense and also played defense for the Falcons as well.
