In the United States, the presidential election is decided by Electoral College votes. In total, there are 538 electoral votes in play. The votes are typically allocated on an all-or-none basis, meaning the candidate that wins the popular vote in a given state also wins that state's electoral votes. Each state is allocated a number of electors equal to the the number of people in that state's congressional delegation (the number of congressmen plus the two senators from each state). The District of Columbia is allocated three electors. When you vote in the Nov. 6 presidential election, you are actually voting for your candidate's electors. Voters within the city limits of Dacula pass package store referendum by large margin.
UPDATED Nov. 6, 2012 at 8:30 p.m. By an overwhelming margin, Dacula voters have indicated their support for allowing package stores within the city limits. Earlier this year, Russ Weaver began a petition drive in hopes of securing enough signatures from Dacula voters to have a package store referendum placed on the November ballot. His efforts were successful. As a result, city residents headed to the polls today to answer the following question: “Shall the issuance of licenses for the package sale of distilled spirits be approved?” The voters said yes by a 181 to 76 margin. The totals, according to Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks, will remain unofficial until the results of the election are certified. “The electorate has spoken,” Wilbanks said. “I …

Results Updated 2 a.m., Wednesday Gwinnett County voters provided few surprises on Election Day. They came out in large numbers, voted mostly Republican and provided several lopsided outcomes. Nearly 75 percent of the county's registered voters casted their ballots, more than five percentage points better than the 2008 turnout. Gwinnettians voted for Gov. Mitt Romney for president, for incumbents in 11 races, including three Board of Education candidates, and in favor of the controversial Public Charter School Amendment (by a 63% to 37% margin), which drew similar margins elsewhere in the state. U.S. Representatives Rob Woodall (R, District 7) and Hank Johnson (D, District 4) had sizable leads among their Gwinnett constituents as they …

Bookies, statisticians say Obama will win a second term. Polls indicate race still close.
An Irish betting house is so sure President Obama will win reelection, they have already started paying off those who bet on him to win. According to Irish Central, the bookmaker says Mitt Romney gave it a good shot, but has no chance of winning. "Romney gave it a good shot and is doing well in the popular vote, but we suspect he's had his moment in the sun and is likely to be remembered more for his legendary gaffes than presidential potential,” a spokeswoman for the betting house told Irish Central. "The overall betting trend has shown one way traffic for Obama and punters seem to have called it 100 percent correct." Not only do the bookies favor Obama, some number crunchers do as well. In an article for the Atlantic Wire, Gabriel Snyder…
Tuesday's ballot includes a Georgia constitutional amendment to re-establish a state commission to approve charter schools. Your job is to decide if that's a good idea.
There aren't a lot of statewide issues on the ballot Nov. 6, but one has the potential to affect school districts, parents and children throughout Georgia. It's Amendment 1, and the ballot will say it "Provides for improving student achievement and parental involvement through more public charter school options." The question voters will answer yes or no to is, "Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended to allow state or local approval of public charter schools upon the request of local communities?" So what does a yes vote mean? If the amendment passes, the state will create a commission that can approve charter schools in local communities, even if local school boards oppose them. Supporters of the amendment believe this is necessary …
