5 Rules for Safe Trick or Treating

Stay safe this Halloween by following these five simple rules.

Planning to hit the spooky streets of Dacula on Halloween night? Make sure your fright-filled journey is a safe one by following these five safety tips:

1. Never go trick-or-treating alone - There really is safety in numbers. Parents or responsible adults should always accompany younger children.

2. If the porch light isn't on, move along - Only go to homes where trick-or-treaters are expected and welcome. Be sure to say "Trick or treat" and, most importantly, "Thank you." If the porch light is out, don't stop and never, ever enter a home or a car to get candy.

3. Choose costumes carefully - Avoid costumes that are ill-fitting, flammable, impede vision or pose a tripping hazard. Realistic-looking weapons or potentially dangerous props are not a good idea either.

4. Watch where you are going - Car vs. trick-or-treater, the trick-or-treater will lose every time. Stay on the sidewalks, only cross the street in established crosswalks where applicable, don't dart out between parked cars and never assume a motorist sees you.

5. Inspect your candy before eating it - Don't eat anything that isn't commercially wrapped and toss any candy that shows signs of tampering. If your child is very young, be sure to confiscate any potential choking hazards and, for all trick-or-treaters, moderation is the key. Don't eat your entire stash on Halloween night!
