Election Day: City of Dacula Voters to Decide on Sunday Package Sales

The State House 104 race and countywide SPLOST on the ballot for other Dacula area voters.

Tuesday, Nov. 5, is election day.

Voters within the city limits of Dacula will decide whether the city's sole liquor store will be able to sell packaged distilled spirits on Sundays.

Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks, Councilman Gregory Reeves and Councilman Wendell Holmes all qualified with no opposition leaving the referendum on whether or not to allow Sunday sales of packaged distilled spirits as the only city issue to be decided in this year's election. In 2011, the Georgia legislature approved a bill allowing city and county voters to decide whether or not to allow Sunday package sales. The issue is just now going before Dacula voters because the city did not have a liquor store until last month.

Dacula area residents inside and outside the city limits will head to the polls to vote on two other issues: the Gwinnett County SPLOST renewal and the State House 104 race.

The Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) is a three-year, 1-percent sales tax expected to generate an estimated $498 million to be used for transportation, public safety, parks and other projects.

Since the first Gwinnett County SPLOST was approved in 1985, voters have only once (in 1996) opted not to approve the tax. The most recent SPLOST -- the 2009 SPLOST -- is set to expire in 2014. According to county data, that SPLOST had generated $579.1 million as of July 2013. Click here to see how the 2014 SPLOST, if approved, will be spent.

Also on the Nov. 5 ballot for Dacula area voters is the special election for State House 104Teresa CantrellChuck Efstration,Tim Puckett and Todd Tyson are seeking to fill the seat vacated by Donna Sheldon.

The polls will be open on Nov. 5 from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
