Celebrate America's History Essays Contests

The Philadelphia Winn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring two prestigious national essay contests. Students eligible to participate are GWINNETT COUNTY PUBLIC, PRIVATE, PAROCHIAL SCHOOL or HOME-SCHOOLED students in the Archer, Central Gwinnett, Grayson, North Gwinnett, Parkview and Shiloh Clusters. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners.

 

The American History Essay Contest is open to students in grades 5 through 8. The title of the essay is “The Lives of Children during the American Revolution.” Writers should pretend to be a boy or girl during the colonial fight for freedom. Using historical facts, discuss how the war is affecting your life. Each student may portray either an historical child or a fictional child living during that time. The length should be from 300 to 1000 words (depending on grade level.) A

The American History Essay Contest winner will receive a check for $100.00, a Bronze Medal, and a Philadelphia Winn DAR Chapter Winner Certificate. All other entrants will receive a Certificate of Participation from Philadelphia Winn DAR.

The Christopher Columbus Essay Contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12. The title of the essay is “How Do Americans View Christopher Columbus and George Washington Today?” Both men are considered heroes from whose lives Americans can draw beneficial lessons. The similarities and differences between the ways in which Christopher Columbus and George

Washington dealt with and overcame the challenges and adversities they faced should be discussed. This question should be considered, “What can Americans apply in their own lives from the experiences of these men?” The length should be between 800 and 1,200 words. The Philadelphia Winn DAR Chapter will award the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest winner a check for $200.00 and a Philadelphia Winn DAR Chapter Winner Certificate. All other entrants will receive a Certificate of Participation from Philadelphia Winn DAR.

 

Winners from each Essay Contest will automatically be entered into the Georgia State Level contests, followed by Division Levels and National Levels. Additional prizes are awarded to winners at State, Division, and National levels. Winners will be featured in local Gwinnett County news media, and they may wish to use their achievements in a future job resume or college application.

 

November 30, 2013 is the deadline for submitting essays. All essays MUST comply with specific requirements.
