Elect Timothy Swiney

Why Senate District 9 is Vital for Democrats in November.

Currently, Republicans hold a two-thirds super-majority in both houses of the State Legislature.  This means that Republicans will be able to over-ride Governor Carter’s veto, and continue to push through their radical legislative agenda, including passing Constitutional Amendments without Democrat votes.

It's not enough to elect a Democrat Governor!  We must end the Republican Super-Majority in our State Legislature.

My name is Timothy Swiney and I am the Democratic Candidate for Georgia State Senate District 9.  Georgia's Senate is composed of 56 Senators, 38 Republicans and 18 Democrats.  This gives Republicans a 2/3 Senate Majority ... a super-majority. This means that even with a Democratic Governor, Republicans will hold a veto-proof majority; giving them the power to push through their radical conservative agenda, including the ability to pass Constitutional Amendments over Democrat objections.  Only a single Democrat Senate pick-up in November will deny Republicans a 2/3 majority and return Georgia to a two party government.

For the first time in 20 years Georgia District 9 is an Open Seat . It is the only currently held Republican Senate Seat with a Democrat challenger and no Incumbent.

On May 20th Republican Incumbent Senator Don Balfour lost his primary, making Georgia Senate District 9 an open race for the first time in two decades.  The Republican nominee in SD9 is still undetermined, but what we know for certain is that the candidate that emerges from the primary runoff will be financially drained, heavily damaged, and highly vulnerable.

This makes District 9 ripe for a Democratic victory in November.

Senate District 9 is not just important for ending the Republican supermajority in the State Legislature, but is also important for both the U.S. Senate and Governor campaigns.  Gwinnett County has the 3rd highest number of registered voters in the state, just behind Fulton and DeKalb Counties.

A win in Gwinnett’s Senate District 9 will almost assure victories in both the U.S. Senate and Governor’s races.
