GCPS Accepting Applications for the GEMS Oversight Committee

The Gwinnett County Public School System is currently accepting applications for those interested in serving on the GEMS (Gwinnett Educational Management System) Oversight Committee. While serving on this committee representatives will perform annual reviews of the Academic Knowledge and Skills Curriculum. Following this review you will have the opportunity to make recommendations to CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks. As a member of this committee, you will be expected to serve for three years. Applications will be accepted through June 1. Call 678-301-7030 for more details.

  • Congratulations to the varsity girls’ and boys’ golf teams. The boys finished fourth and the girls finished fifth in their respective state tournaments.
  • In their inaugural year, the lacrosse teams have earned bids to the state playoffs.
  • The Hawks varsity baseball team was crowned 2011 Region 7-AAAAA Champs. Congratulations Hawks!
  • Congratulations to these students who have signed college athletic scholarships to play women's soccer: Tatum O’Keefe (Georgia College and State University), Taylor Cornelius (Georgia College and State University), Torie Scalera (Armstrong Atlantic University), Tessa Lukens (Lenoir Rhyne University), Cari Powell (West Georgia University) and Lindsay Kempf (Ball State University). 
  • Congratulations to the girls’ varsity golf team who recently finished third in the state championships at Bull Creek Golf Course in Columbus. 
  • School history has been made at as the 2011 varsity boys’ tennis team made it into the sweet sixteen in the state tennis tournament. Way to go Lions!
  • Kiersten  Nowell of the golf team qualified for the state competition as an individual competitor and finished fourth in the region tournament. Great job Kiersten!
  • The men’s golf team has finished fourth in their region.
  • Congratulations to French students who have ranked in the top 10 in the National French Contest. These students included Dandara Bastos-McDaniel, Querida Gyimah, and Sara Dorhmi. 
  • sixth graders participated in awards night on Tuesday, May 3.
  • cafeteria scored a perfect 100 on their recent Health Department inspection. Great job Harbins!
  • held family night at Stevie B’s on Monday, May 2.
  • Congratulations to second graders who placed first in the region in the Continental Math League. This competition had representatives from ten states.
  • students participated in PTA spirit night at Sonic on Thursday, May 5.
  • Local elementary schools held kindergarten registration on Thursday, May 5. 
  • On Friday, April 29 elementary students welcomed their grandparents to campus for the 2011 celebration of Grandparent’s Day.

Upcoming Events

  • Don’t miss the student/parent college option information sessions hosted by Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Penn and Stanford this Wednesday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. This event will take place at the Marriott Atlanta Buckhead Hotel in Atlanta. Call 404-261-9250 for more information.
  • The last day of school for GCPS students will be on Friday, May 27.
