Fun Run to Honor OMS Student

Up-to-date education news from Dacula schools.

Registration is underway for the “Jus B-Active Fun Run” to benefit the Jacob D. Bullock Foundation, Inc. The foundation is a non-profit organization created in honor of Jacob Bullock, an student, who lost his life in an attempt to rescue his friend who fell through the ice of a frozen lake back in January of 2010. This program works to provide positive opportunities for at-risk youth and rewards those who show excellence in multiple areas. You can support this foundation by registering to participate in the "Jus B-Active" 5K Fun Walk/Run that will take place at on June 4. Click here to read more and register to partipate.

In other education news:

  • A painting about the Holocaust by Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology student Michelle Partogi won the Seventh District’s Annual Congressional High School Art Competition. Partogi will receive a scholarship from the Art Institute of Atlanta and an annual scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design. Winners from across the country will be recognized at the U.S. Capitol during the National Gala. This artwork will be on display in the tunnel that leads from the Congressional office buildings to the U.S. Capitol for one year. North Gwinnett High School student Hillary Jones took second place, and Kelly Glennon of the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology finished third. 
  • set a goal of reading 80,000 pages in celebration of National Children’s book week. The students were successful and Principal Paul Willis fulfilled his promise of eating a bug on May 11 at the school.
  • Congratulations to Principal Michelle Farmer who was awarded the Outstanding Principal Award and the Outstanding Advocate Award at the recent District 12 meeting. The PTA also was awarded the Model PTA Award.
  • held a Career Fair on May 11. Middle school students learned about multiple career choices during this educational event.
  • held seventh grade awards night on Tuesday, May 10.
  • The Orchestras presented their spring concerts on Monday, May 9.
  • Congratulations to student Hannah Hill who joined the Two Mile Club this week.
  • Did you know May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month as well as Better Hearing and Speech Month?
  • Congratulations to Andrew Redhead of who was the region champion in the long and triple jump.
  • honored Sandra Manhan and Dandara Bastos-McDaniel as French students of the month.

  • Next week, May 16-20, is Custodial Appreciation Week.
  • The Gwinnett County Board of Education will hold a regular meeting on May 19 at 5:30 p.m. at the Instructional Support Center in Suwanee.
  • The Council meeting will be held on May 19.  Call the school for location and time of meeting.
  • will hold their Baccalaureate service on Sunday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at the Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church.
  • The Gwinnett County Public Library is encouraging middle and high school students to sign up for the summer reading program “You are Here.” There will be free events for those signed up for the program including retro gaming, drum circle, and more. Sign-ups began on May 9 and will continue at our local libraries.
  • will be holding an “8th Grade Event” to celebrate those students who have finished the eighth grade this year. This event will include a catered lunch, talent show, and inflatables. Students will receive event t-shirts as well. Student fees to cover this event are $25 per student. For more information contact Tara Petracco here. This event is for OMS students only.
  • is offering a four-day Kindercamp this summer for incoming kindergartners. Camp will run from July 11-14 from 8:30 a.m. until noon.
