Helping Mill Creek Cheerleaders Make a Difference

Former cheerleading coach Katie Avery talks about her rewarding new role as community service coordinator.

Katie Avery is the community service coordinator for varsity cheerleading. Her position entails finding and informing the girls of community service event dates and details. She also handles the paperwork related to the events and keeps track of all community service hours for each cheerleader.

“It’s rewarding to see the girls help with community events, and especially when they are excited to make a difference in the lives of others,” Avery said.

Mill Creek varsity cheerleaders are required to do at least 10 community service hours per sport. If a cheerleader cheers for both varsity football cheerleading and varsity basketball, she must have a total of 20 community service hours. The cheerleaders must also assist with at least three events unrelated to their main community service area.

“Our three main events are helping with Relay for Life, the [Mill Creek Athletic Association] recreation program -- many of our girls coach rec squads -- and working with the North Gwinnett Co-Op and Hamilton Mill United Methodist Food Pantry,” Avery said.

Avery enjoys her role as community service coordinator. Before this position, she coached varsity cheerleading for six years. Avery recently became a new mom, and finds that this role works better for her schedule.

“This is my first year not coaching,” Avery said. “I had my first baby in May and now I can still be involved with the cheerleading program and the wonderful girls but it fits with my schedule as a new mommy.”

Avery grew up in Snellville and graduated from Brookwood High School before attending college at the University of Georgia. In addition to her role as the Mill Creek High School cheerleading community service coordinator, she also teaches at the high school. Avery is in her seventh year at Mill Creek as a family and consumer sciences teacher.
