Local Church Offers Election Day Communion

Tucker's United Methodist Church hosting election event on Tuesday.

My name is Jimmy Moor, Senior Pastor at and I am going to tell you about our Election Day Communion service.

I first ran into this idea a couple of weeks ago through some postings I saw on Facebook. I was intrigued, but set it aside. Last week a couple of things happened that brought it back to mind, I shared it with some of leaders, and we moved forward.

There is a website that you might want to look at that will give you a better sense of what this is about. Churches of many denominations from across the country are involved. This began in some Mennonite churches in 2008, as I understand it, and has spread this election cycle.

Other UMC churches in our area that I know are involved are Decatur First UMC, Druid Hills UMC, and Mossy Creek UMC. There are churches from other denominations as well.

We are approaching it to lift up two main themes, and I believe these are what you will find on the website. First, it is to remember who is the real light and hope of the world. It is not any political candidate or any nation, but Jesus.

Second, it is to remind us as we vote for different candidates, that we are still united in our Christian community by  our faith in Christ. The table reminds us of what transcends our political differences and binds us together despite them.

Tucker's First United Methodist Church is located at 5095 LaVista Road.
