Stella's competitive running debut turned out well Saturday in Suwanee. She was the first canine finisher in the Run For The Rescues 5K, which was sponsored by the .

The finishing time was 19 minutes, 36 seconds for Stella and owner Johan Desmet of Suwanee.

However, Desmet and Stella are not new to the roadways. He participated in a recent 100-mile run from Athens to Atlanta, and he regularly takes Stella on distance runs that cover approximately 10 kilometers. Desmet, 45, was the masters winner and second finisher overall.

The overall winner was Kenyrik Alexis of Grayson, at 19:17.

About 900 people registered for the run and the one-mile fun run, officials said, with 700 recorded finishers. The 5K started and finished on Main Street in Old Town, and the fun run was in Town Center Park.

One finisher was 87-year-old Harry Siemen of Centerville.

Suwanee Patch will have more coverage of the Run For The Rescues soon.
