The Great Outdoors: Running, Golf, Strawberry Picking and More

Get out and get active in or near Dacula. Here is what is going on outdoors this week.

Want to get out and enjoy the great outdoors? Here are some activities in and around Dacula you may want to check out.

Support the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of North Central Georgia by participating in the Run for Kids 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run on Saturday, May 28. This event will begin at 7:45 a.m. at Felker Park at the Stevens Boys’ and Girls’ Club in Monroe. Registration will begin at 6:30 a.m., the fun run starts at 7:45 p.m. and the 5k follows at 8 a.m. Entry fees are $15 early bird, $20 on race day, and $50 for a family of four.

The Trophy Club of Apalachee is holding the May Apalachee Challenge this Sunday, May 29. This four person scramble tournament is open to the public. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and events should conclude around 6:30 p.m. Each participant will receive a box lunch and two drink tickets. Prizes will be awarded for the following: closest to the pin, longest drive, first and second place finishes. The cost to participate is $29 for club members and $49 for non-members. If you are interested in playing in this tournament call the pro shop to reserve a tee time at 770-822-9220.

Try this because it’s just plain cool. Head up to Chateau Elan on Sunday, May 29 and play night golf with glow-in-the-dark golf balls, flagsticks, and tiki torches that light the path. This tournament is played on the first eight holes of the Executive Par 3 walking course. Holes are no more than approximately 115 yards. Cocktails will start at 8 p.m. and golf kicks off at 9 p.m.  Book your tee time by calling 678-425-0900 ext. 41.

If you live in or near the City of Dacula, you need to plan on participating in the 2011 Dacula Memorial 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run. All proceeds benefit our local school and community sports programs. The fun run will begin at 8 a.m. and the 5K shortly after at 8:30 a.m. Runners will meet at to start the races, registration, sign-up and packet pick-up will be available at the starting at 7 a.m.

Strawberry picking season is almost over, so make plans to head out to Washington Farms in Loganville or Watkinsville and pick some fresh berries while they are still available. The farms are closed on Sunday and Monday but open the rest of the week. Washington Farms only accept cash or checks so go prepared.
