Rogue Wolves Attack in ‘The Grey’

Liam Neeson leads a group of roughnecks in the Alaskan wilderness as they fight to survive a vicious pack of wolves on the hunt.

Liam Neeson stars as “an unlikely hero” who leads a group of roughneck men on a quest to survive after their plane crashes in Alaska. The men must face not only merciless, icy weather, but also rogue wolves in “The Grey.”

Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News describes Neeson as “a guy even wolves should be scared of” with “rabid eyes, that snarling face barely concealing a glimpse of tooth as he stalks with a coiled intensity.”

Neumaier praises the supporting actors and adds “The Grey” is, “in the best sense, like a men’s adventure magazine splashed on the big screen.”

Anne Brodie of M&G writes that Neeson “is the actor I want with me when I’m in danger.  His alpha male persona – and willingness to be uncomfortable - makes him the one to lean on.” As for the movie as a whole? “We get just enough information but, not too much to get in the way of what is basically an old-fashioned “thrill ride” slash wilderness meditation,” she explains.

Here’s what other critics had to say about “The Grey”:

The Grey isn't the first movie to strip men of their modern advantages—guns, wheels, thermal gear, freeze-dried rations—and pit them against nature at her least forgiving, and it won't be the last. But it's a real kick in the ass, as much because of what it doesn't do as what it does. - Maitland McDonagh, Film Journal International

Call "The Grey" "Deliverance" Lite, with snow, and wolves. And call it a solid January surprise. - Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

And as Neeson No-Brainers go, this one, directed as if on a diet of testosterone injections and shots of absinthe by Neeson's A-Team helmer, Joe Carnahan, is a reasonably entertaining, loopy blend of brawny bonding and Samuel Beckett-approved rumination. - Lisa Schwarzbaum, EW.com
