Dacula Area Schools Honored for Efforts to Combat Childhood Obesity

One local elementary school and two middle schools received medals.

Three Dacula area schools were among the 107 Georgia schools recently honored by Gov. Nathan Deal for their participation in the SHAPE Honor Roll program.

The program, which began last year, is an initiative Deal launched which encourages students, teachers and schools to combat childhood obesity by making improvements in physical activity, nutrition and wellness. Schools meeting benchmark measurements in all three categories earned a medal.

Mulberry Elementary was this area's only gold medal recipient. Dacula Middle School and Osborne Middle School earned silver medals.

“I would like to thank the families, faculty and staff for their continued commitment to promoting an active lifestyle among students,” Deal said in a released statement. “We are seeing signs of improvement as the SHAPE program continues to grow, but there is still much work to be done.”
