Checkout via Smartphone at the Hamilton Mill Walmart

Scan & Go tracks items while you shop, and syncs with self-checkout.

Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, now has an iPhone app that lets you check out via your smartphone. You can give the new app a try at the Walmart located at 3250 Sardis Church Road in Buford.

The app allows shoppers to use their smartphones to scan the barcode of each purchase, place the product in a cart, and then check out by scanning another barcode at the self-checkout lane. Customers won't have to take their groceries out of their carts until placing them in their vehicles (unless they want to bag them).

It's the only such system used by a retailer.

"We know that our customers are technologically savvy. We understand that they want their experience here to be fast. They want it to be friendly, and we are ready for it," Walmart store manager Katie Wheeler told Fox5 Atlanta.

Scan & Go works within the Walmart app, which soon will be available for Android devices.  It also is being used by several other Walmart locations in Gwinnett.
