Dacula Resident Broadcasts Worldwide

Huey McKeller plays Top 40 hits from his Dacula home on his own online radio station.

When Huey McKeller, 62, sits down at his DJ equipment in Dacula, it’s not just Gwinnett County residents who hear his radio broadcasts. Instead, the man behind Top 40 station Power Radio Online is heard all over the world.

After a career of working in radio in Atlanta, and going into what he calls a semi-retirement, McKeller and his son Mike decided to start up Power Radio Online out of Huey McKeller’s Dacula home. McKeller said that after a life spent in the radio industry, he can tell that the Internet is the wave of the future for radio.

“Internet radio is going to be to FM what FM was to AM back in the late 70s,” McKeller said.

The other advantages to broadcasting on the Internet are also what drew McKeller away from the airwaves and onto the Web. While he does have to pay royalties for the Top 40 hits he spins, Internet radio does not have to abide by the same FCC regulations that AM and FM stations do. He is also able to call all the shots and decide when to go live and when to shut down for the day.

“We can go live any time we want to,” McKeller said. “If we want to go on at midnight we can hit a switch and we’re live. It’s 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.”

Though McKeller has the capability of broadcasting world wide, he also has a strong desire to localize his broadcasts for the people of Gwinnett County. He has worked with charities in the area including Life Flight, broadcasting live from their events. He also has expressed goals to broadcast from Dacula Falcons football games in the future as well.

With Internet radio still growing, McKeller has big goals for Power Radio. But for now he’s happy to provide an international audience with music to help get them through the day and be a positive contributor to the Dacula community.

“It’s an interesting concept,” McKeller said. “It’s growing and it’s going to get bigger.”
