Gun Club With 28-Lane Indoor Shooting Range Expected to Open in July

Facility to be located near the intersection of Braselton Highway and Old Peachtree Road.

In just a few months, area residents will have a new place to hone their firearm skills.

Verne Fowler said he expects his Georgia Gun Club to open in mid- to late July. Gwinnett County recently issued the development permit for the club, which will be located at 1951 Braselton Highway.

The 4.06-acre recreational facility near the intersection of Braselton Highway and Old Peachtree Road will include a 37,300-square-foot, two-story building featuring 28 indoor lanes -- eight tactical, 12 small arms and eight 100-yard rifle lanes.

Fowler said the Georgia Gun Club will also include an 8,000-square-foot retail store with firearms, sporting goods, self-defense items, shooting accessories and more.

The club will be open to the general public, but will also offer memberships, Fowler said. Members will enjoy extra benefits including the use of a members-only lounge and a simulator.

Fowler, who has spent 20 years in retail and 30 years in commercial real estate, said the club will offer programs for all ages and will be focused on education and training.

“We want to be a member of the community,” he said.

Beginning next month, Fowler will open a temporary store at 1944 Braselton Highway. Visitors to the store will be able to see the type of products that will be offered at the Georgia Gun Club retail store and look at plans for the facility.

For more information, visit firearmsacademyga.com. Fowler said a website dedicated solely to the Georgia Gun Club, georgiagunclub.com, should be operational within the next 10 days.

This sounds great, I am looking forward to visiting it. I mainly look foward to use the 100 yard rifle range. I will also look into a family membership.

It does look nice. I can't wait to visit. It will be great having a range nearby.
Bryan Morrow February 07, 2013 at 03:53 PM
I'm pretty excited to have a 100yd rifle range so close to home.... but, less excited it's right against my child's day care lol.
Melissa February 07, 2013 at 07:48 PM
Awesome!
Ross Crawford February 07, 2013 at 09:42 PM
Wow, that's a big investment and sounds like it will be a state of the art range. Have any of you visited a firearms store recently? Since President Obama's talk of various firearm bans, the public has made a "run" on the gun stores, literally buying every semi-auto rifle, Glock pistol, 10+ capacity mags, and all the ammo. A story on CNN recently said the ammo shortage is so bad some police departments have had to postpone training. Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, a huge gun shop, has empty shelves where 100's of boxes of ammo sat. The only AR15 type rifles in the entire store are marked "display only". They are taking orders with an agreement that the price may change when the order comes in. If it comes in. Anyway, hope the place isn't sidetracked by all the panic buying. People just need to take a deep breath.

Big Gun Armory, our 'neighborhood' store on Braselton Road, has also been hit by the lack of ammunition. They still have a good selection of firearms, at competitive prices, and some ammo. Check them out! I can't wait for this location to open. I will check into the memberships!

Wow...If this is where I think it is....its right between Discovery Point DayCare and Kidz Harbor Daycare. Kidz Harbor Daycare just opened in June of last year. Why on earth would anyone think it would be a good idea to open a range right between two daycare facilities? Really...this is the best parcel of land available? Yeah...yeah..yeah.... Owners of guns are law abiding blah blah! I bet more than a few parents will be a little upset about this and pull their children out of those daycare spots. Hopefully, it will not cause them to close.
GregRodgers February 08, 2013 at 03:09 PM
Exactlly....right near not one...but two daycare facilities....but hey. In Georgia, you can open a business almost anywhere. Remember the crematory that was to open in Snellvile....at the entrance of a subdivision. Priceless!
Cowboy February 08, 2013 at 06:10 PM
Well Greg, That's an interesting comment, I guess now we know which day care nurseries will now be the safest in Georgia, and that no bad guy will even think about committing a crime at one of those day care centers....
GregRodgers February 08, 2013 at 08:01 PM
Cowboy...you really believe that? "I guess now we know which day care nurseries will now be the safest in Georgia" That has to be the most absurd nonsene I think I've read with regards to the uproar about guns. Your assumption is that only law abiding people would attend the shooting range. My assumption is that people teeter on the bordeline of going off the deep end more than people would like to think. In otherwords, any one with a gun law abiding or not can lose it at any time. This is a fact....just look at the cop in LA that just lost it... Let me make this clear....I have nothing against owning a gun. I do have a problem with semi automatics as those are weapons of war that no citizen should have access to period. I have a big problem with folks with guns in close proximity to children. Only gun lovers would think kids would be "the safest" with guns around. Very myopic indeed! Seems somewhat selfish too me...
Cowboy February 09, 2013 at 01:53 AM
Greg, Based on some of your past comments on patch, I knew you would enjoy commenting on that one. I agree that It does seem like a wierd place to put a shooting range, but hey, it was approved by the ones elected into office, so lets deal with it.... A question for you.. What kind of guns are you refering to as "semi-automatics" they are muliple types.. which ones do you refer to as "weapons of war?"
Jim S February 09, 2013 at 05:13 PM
Any weapon that automatically chambers a new round in the same operation as ejecting a spent round is considered an 'autoloader'. Weapons which load in this manner and can fire another round with only the pull of the trigger are considered semi-automatic because the firing pin must be manipulated by the trigger pull for each time it is fired. Automatic weapons will continuously fire with one trigger pull I have seen these terms thrown around on this and other posts, and wanted to make sure we all understood the nomenclature.
JimC February 09, 2013 at 06:51 PM
Hey Greg, Sounds like you should move to California you might like it there better.
Mr. B February 09, 2013 at 07:15 PM
I'm personally not in favor of "assault weapons", however, I understand the argument in favor of them. But I don't understand the argument that a gun range shouldn't be near a daycare. I doubt anyone is going to go to a range and decide while they are there to drop by the daycare and shoot a few kids just for fun. If a sick individual were to decide to shoot kids at a daycare, I doubt the proximity of a gun range would be a consideration for them. You or your wife could stay home and raise your own kids instead of using a daycare. But just in case, tell your kids to keep their heads down when you drop them off for someone else to raise for you.
Cowboy February 10, 2013 at 02:56 PM
JK, Your info is correct, But Greg's "loose" terms makes me question if he knows what he's talking about. Some people look at a hunting rifle or shotgun that is painted black and say "Assault weapon" This country has been made great by it's vaules and pricipals that it was founded on 200 years ago, but now we have people trying to undermine it's greatness by having a "whats in it for me" attitude and playing the "I want whats mine" attitude. These people that lay around and want their "goverment checks" and refuse to work make me angry, but our government allowing it just to get the votes next time around makes me even more mad. Am I the only one that see's that the main reason to allow 11 million illegal alliens to come on in and welcome to the US with open arms, is nothing more then a way to assure 11 million more votes for them in 2016. ??
Gun Owner February 11, 2013 at 02:14 PM
Really Greg? Semi-automatics are a weapon of war? Your knowledge of firearms is lacking, you should probably read up on them before you comment. Our Armed Forces use AUTOMATIC weapons for the most part. Automatic weapons will fire multiple rounds with every trigger pull. You must have a license to own a automatic weapon, the licenses are not easy to get. Semi-automatic weapons shoot 1 round per trigger pull. The "automatic" part is that the next round is loaded into the chamber. A classic Colt revolver held 6 rounds, 1 trigger pull equals 1 round being fired, then the barrel rotated and the next round was ready to fire. Sounds alot like a semi-automatic. Your logic is flawed, according to you we should not let police precincts be built next to schools as a cop can lose it like the guy in California. Geez.
Mr. B February 12, 2013 at 04:17 PM
Probably the reason for considering this as an appropriate place is the same as the one considered by the builders of the daycare centers...proximity to customers.

I drove past the site this weekend and there didn't seem to be any activity or noticeable progress from the last time I drove by a couple months ago. Any updates on plans/timelines?
Kristi Reed (Editor) July 15, 2013 at 09:54 AM
I haven't spoken with him lately. I'll see what I can find out.
Kristi Reed (Editor) July 16, 2013 at 09:50 AM
@DaculaHood - I got an email from him this morning. He said construction equipment should be at the site tomorrow weather permitting. I guess the rain is making trouble all around.
DaculaHood July 16, 2013 at 07:42 PM
Thanks for the follow-up Kristi! I'm guessing a July opening isn't going to happen though, did he mention the adjusted target date? Thanks again,
Kristi Reed (Editor) July 16, 2013 at 07:47 PM
No, definitely not July. February 2014 is the new target date.
local resident July 24, 2013 at 04:47 PM
I am not "anti-gun"...I am "anti-stupid people with guns". That said, I am a resident of this area...just purchased a house 2 years ago. I have a child who attends one of the two daycares mentioned. I have a number of friends who own various types of guns. I am also a relative of the police colonel for the State of Connecticut who was one of the first responders for the Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre. I do not find the idea of having a gun range between two daycare centers, 1 mile from an elementary school, a middle school, and a high school; at all calming or reassuring. There most certainly must be more appropriate places that are not in the middle of a neighborhood community for this type of establishment. I commend the owners for marketing their efforts toward "education and training" and "wanting to be a member of the community", but don't think this is the most appropriate location. I have been near other indoor gun ranges and know the sound can be heard outside the facility. This will hinder the daycare businesses, especially Discovery Point since the new building will essentially be in their backyard. The kids’ spend a great deal of time outside and there are a number of centers NOT near this gun range that parents can move to. I am disappointed (again) in Gwinnett County’s choices. Just my two cents...take it for what it's worth.

Comments from Cowboy, JimC and "Gun Owner....typical. They refuse to see that guns are a huge problem in this country and alot has changed in 200 yrs. Again, another fool in a school with an Ak-47 assault rifle. Guns? Not a problem. Why...you will say oh he is mentally ill. Blah Blah Blah. Whatever....Sure we have an old document that we live by. You can hang your hat on that....but to say in this country we do not have a violence problem as it relates to guns is laughable. Again....selfish gun loving people. I mean just last week, 3 yrs old in Lilburn..killed by a gun...another 3yr old picks up a gun in a closest...kills himself because a gun loving house guest did not lock his gun, baseball player in Kansas killed by a gun just for fun. Love your guns guys. It's all nonsense.
Cowboy August 22, 2013 at 11:33 AM
Greg, The person that is responsible in the 3 year old shooting is the person that was owner of the gun, "not the gun", The boy that took the AK-47 to school was a mental nut as well as a past police problem, there too the person that owned the AK-47 was at fault for failure to secure the gun. I too don't like gun violence, but I neither like people being killed by knifes.. should we ban all "butcher knifes" because they are bigger then other ones and have a longer blade? maybe you should go shooting with a person that enjoys guns from a perspective of personal enjoyment. When I go shooting, I try to sharpen my skills as a marksman, not as a killer. I had an experiance once that the showing of my gun probally saved my life from 3 thugs that were preying on fishermen that were alone at a state park. he was hard to understand with all the gold teeth, but i think he said "darn good thing you had that Glock" or something like that....
