Dacula Dolphins 2013 Pentathlon Results

Saturday morning June 8th, teams from all over North Georgia sent their top swimmers to the Brad Akin YMCA in winder Georgia for the NGSL pentathlon. In ancient Greece pentathlons were events where athletes (normally in military service) competed in the long jump, javelin throw, and discus throw, followed by the stadion (a short foot race) and wrestling. The NGSL Pentathlon is based in the water, and they compete in Butter Fly, Back Stroke, Breast, and Free Style strokes. Each swimmer must compete in each of these strokes plus the Individual Medley, in which each stroke is utilized in one specific section of this event. Many of our athletes are new to the sport of competitive swimming, trying to improve specific areas, or just love the sport and this is one of our most coveted events. It is an honor to be chosen not just because it demonstrates that the swimmer has reached a specific skill level, but the swimmer must have the endurance to complete five events against the best the league has to offer. Eleven teams sent 270 swimmers to the Pentathlon. Times were combined from each event to determine the individuals placement, this is why this meet is the NGLS equivalent to the Iron Man.

Ranging in ages from six to eighteen. These individual swimmer performed very well and we would like to congratulate each and every one of you for your accomplishment. Being entered in the event is a great accomplishment, but being recognized at the end is very special indeed. The NGSL also has a base line time for each age group known as All Stars. In order to make it into our divisional qualifier to have the chance to compete with other swimmers from all over the state; NGSL swimmers must meet this time. Although every event has it time for glory, there is equal opportunity to face difficulties whenever you compete. One of our swimmers, who was swimming very well and had positioned herself to be in running for obtaining one of those coveted ribbons was disqualified in the IM. In the start of the race she miss timed her breathing and took in water. After a slight period of panic by her and some others watching, she recovered and managed to get herself back into the race. She completed the race knowing full well, she had been disqualified. A special shout out for Sarah Fitzsimmons, for facing and recovering from a difficult situation. We are proud of our other swimmers like Natalie Flamenco, Mario Flamenco, and Ben Hedges, who barely missed all-star time in their events. Swimming is not just about winning and placement is it is also about personal achievement The Dacula Dolphins take pride in recognizing swimming and personal accomplishments of our swimmers. We believe that whenever there is opportunity for our children to grow, that they have the ability to be recognized for that action. We congratulate each swimmer, for their participation, heart, and look forward to watching them grow.
