Matches and Gasoline? Mr. Clean in a Spray Bottle?

We had some guys out trimming our shrubs today and they made an unpleasant discovery - a big hornets nest tucked in one of our bushes.

Now the question is how to get rid of it. One of the landscapers seemed to favor the "burn them out" approach (he had tried bug killer on a nest before and assured me that most definitely did not work). My father, who is quite fond of his flamethrower, also seemed to think the only good hornet is a burned crisp one. The guys on the California radio show I talk to each week suggested using Mr. Clean in a spray bottle.
