Around the Region: Inmate Death, Trayvon Martin Protest and False Crime Report

Chasen Chambers, 22, died Thursday at  after being transported from the Douglas County jail.

Another inmate alerted deputies to the fact that Chambers was having a seizure. Chambers was then transported to  and died there Thursday at about 5 p.m.

"In the doctor's opinion he had swallowed Methamphetamine," Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller said. "In doing interviews with the inmates at least one of them said that the victim had said that he had swallowed two eight balls of plastic baggies of Meth before he was arrested. One of them may have burst and sent Meth throughout his system and killed him."

Several South Cobb residents, including Austell activist Rich Pellegrino, held a prayer vigil in the Marietta Square on Sunday.

The vigil was held for 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla. on Feb. 26. The shooting has sparked demonstrations, rallies, vigils and several tough conversations about race in the United States.

State Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan (D-Austell) and State Rep. Rashad Taylor, D-Atlanta pledged during a rally on the Capitol on Monday to introduce a bill that would repeal Georgia’s “Stand Your Ground” law. Many believe a similar Florida law has allowed Zimerman to remain free.

A Hiram man lied to authorities about a woman stealing his vehicle, and after she was charged with the theft, he made her pay him $500 to try to have the warrant removed, police said.

Leonard Roshay Davie, 54, told  on Feb. 3 that a woman had driven off with his 1998 Chrysler Town and Country van the day before, according to a police report. The woman said she had parked the van in the Marietta Square and had lost the keys.

On Feb. 9, the woman and Davie went to the Magistrate Court office to have the warrant against the woman rescinded.

“Once at the office, he refused to go to the warrant window until she gave him $500,” the report says. She withdrew the money from her bank and gave it to him, but was still unable to get the warrant rescinded, it adds.

While at the hearing, Davie was arrested and charged with false report of a crime and threatening a witness.
