Around the Region: Man Charged in Fatal Accident, Drunk Bicyclist Arrested and ‘Evil’ Person Steals Liquor

Authorities have charged a 44-year-old man on Highway 20 in front of the in South Forsyth County.

Stephen John Simone of 2200 Skylar Leigh Drive in Buford is charged with vehicular homicide in the second degree, a misdemeanor, according to Capt. Mark Hoffman with Special Operations of the .

The victim, 52-year-old Carey James Abee, was traveling eastbound on Highway 20 on his 2011 Taizhou Meiduo Scooter when his vehicle was struck by Simone's vehicle.

Simone, who was traveling westbound on Highway 20 in a 2006 Isuzu box truck, failed to yield while making a left turn onto Windermere Parkway, according to Capt. Tim House with the Sheriff's Office. Simone’s truck overturned pinning Abee beneath it. Abee was taken to Northside Hospital-Forsyth where he later died.

– Norcross Patch

A man on a bicycle was arrested for being a pedestrian under the influence after police observed him traveling across all lanes of traffic on Nov. 4.

A Gwinnett County police officer observed a the 29-year-old man riding a bike with no lights or reflectors. According to the police report, the bicyclist was swerving across the roadway on Singleton Road near Turners Ridge Drive in unincorporated Norcross.

The bicyclist was almost struck by a vehicle and had a hard time staying on his bike, according to the report. The officer ordered the man to stop, but the bicyclist instead looked directly at the officer and kept on riding. 

The bicyclist eventually stopped and told the officer the reason why he didn't stop immediately is because he was getting marijuana out of his pocket. Nothing illegal was found in the man’s possession. After failing a sobriety test, the bicyclist was arrested and taken to the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

 

– Barrow Patch

On Nov. 6, a Winder police officer met with a city resident reporting a burglary at his home on Capitol Avenue.

The complainant said he saw an individual he knew enter his residence through the open front door and take two bottles of liquor, Canadian Mist and Hennessy, valued at $15.99 and $28 respectively.

The complainant told the officer the person who took his liquor was “evil” before admitting he was extremely drunk at the time he made the 911 call reporting the burglary. The complainant said he intended to press charges.
