A Milton man who was just trying to help a friend fell prey to a scam that cost him $3,100.

On Aug. 8, the Milton man received a call from a man who claimed to be someone he knew. The caller said he was vacationing in Lima, Peru with his wife when local police stopped them and searched their car, finding drugs in it. Jacob Elisha Downer, 29 of Marietta, was airlifted to Grady for treatment Friday at approximately 10:20 p.m. but doesn't remember a thing about the accident that caused his injuries, according to Gordy Wright, spokesman for the Georgia State Highway Patrol.

Downer was found in the roadway on Meadowview Road in Lithia Springs.  There was no visible evidence on his clothing, no witnesses, no one who heard anything, no roadway evidence and no vehicle evidence at the scene, Wright said in an email.
