Around the Region: Police Warn Occupy Athens Protestors, Thieves Steal $70,000 in Jewelry and American Idol Winner Coming to Atlanta

A video posted on the website OccupyAthens.org last week shows University of Georgia Police Chief Jimmy Williamson as he confronts protestors in front of the University Arch.

In the video, the crowd of protestors extends over half of the Archway steps, but provides a clear path to passersby.

Williamson tells protestors they may be subject to arrest , and asks the protestors to move away and set up on either side of the Arch.

Following Williamson's announcement, the protestors express their disagreement with the position of the University:

"They essentially demand we cease any activity that could be mistaken for any occupation or meaningful protest against a government and economic system awash with corporate corruption and purchased influence, and all of this in the very place we have legally obtained a permit to gather. We believe and the National Lawyers Guild agrees that these demands are an abridgement of our collective and individual First Amendment rights."

A North Bethany Creek Drive family returned home from dinner on Oct. 23 and discovered $70,000 worth of jewelry missing from their home.

reported a screen from an open first floor bathroom window had been removed. Police believe the thief entered through the window and left by the back door.

Twenty-five pieces of jewelry ranging in value from $500 to $5,700 were reported missing.

American Idol" winner Scott McCreery and Grammy-award-winning gospel duo Mary Mary will lead an all-star lineup of performers at the annual lighting of s great tree on Thanksgiving night at Lenox Square in Buckhead.

The 64th annual ceremony that began at the old Rich's store in downtown Atlanta will be from 7-8 p.m. Nov. 24. A pre-show concert with interview and performances begins at 6:15 p.m., according to a news release. After the tree lighting, the audience will be treated to a fireworks display set to holiday music.

More than 100,000 people are expected to attend the event, with more than 500,000 more to watch the live broadcast on WSB-TV.
