Around the Region: Protesters Occupy Snellville, Heroic Dog Killed by Electrical Fire and Voter Registration Decreases

On Monday, Nov. 7, Occupy Atlanta in hopes of helping the Rorey family keep their home.

The Snellville family of five, including two school-age children, has lived in their Shoreside Circle home since 2003. They are now facing foreclosure.

Occupiers say they plan to stay as long as it takes, and that they are prepared to be arrested if and when eviction time comes for the family.

– Northeast Cobb Patch

An electrical problem sparked the Nov. 1 fire that destroyed the brick ranch house at 607 Joel Dr. and killed Duncan, the heroic boxer dog who saved his owner's life while the fire raged around 3:30 in the morning.

"The cause is electrical in the attic," Lt. told Northeast Cobb in a statement Monday.

The fire started in the center of the house.

The news of Northeast Cobb resident Scott Dunn's loss spread worldwide.

People from across the nation have reached out to help Dunn with donations, portraits of Duncan and boxer puppies.

 

– Sandy Springs Patch

The number of African-American registered voters in Sandy Springs has fallen 23 percent since the last presidential election, according to a Patch analysis.

Overall, Sandy Springs’ voter rolls have shrunk by 8 percent since November 2008, according to statistics from the Georgia Secretary of State’s elections division.

State data show there are 7,816 black registered voters, down from 10,192 in November 2008.

There are 34,239 white voters in the city, down from 39,049 in the presidential election. The drop in white registered voters is 12 percent.

Statewide, the number of registered voters is down by less than 1 percent, from nearly 5.8 million in November 2008 to about 5.7 million today.
