Georgia State Patrol Officer Shoots Man Near East Lake Golf Club

A Georgia State Patrol officer shot an Atlanta man Sunday evening near the East Lake Golf Club.

The shooting victim, Gerald D. Williams Jr., 32, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Williams, driving a gold Saturn, was attempting to drive his vehicle in a restricted area near the intersection of Alston Drive Southeast and Green Avenue.

A GSP officer stopped him and informed Williams the area was restricted.

A verbal altercation ensued and the officer attempted to arrest Williams.

Williams began to drive off, dragging the officer. Another state trooper, shoot at Williams twice, striking him. The officer being dragged sustained minor injuries.

Athens Parapro Dismissed After Taping Incident

officials said Monday a teacher’s aide has been fired after she shut with clear packaging tape last week.

“This type of action is both unacceptable and inexcusable,” said Clarke County School District spokesperson Anisa Sullivan Jimenez.  “Any issues similar to this will not be tolerated.”

Jimenez didn’t identify the paraprofessional, who worked with a kindergarten teacher at , but she did say this was the parapro’s first year at the school.

Gwinnett Great Days of Service Event Is Near

A leading Gwinnett nonprofit is again hosting the annual Gwinnett Great Days of Service volunteer event Friday and Saturday.

The event, organized by the Gwinnett Coalition for Health and Human Services, is designed to engage the community through volunteer time, sponsorships, and donations to support local community service project, according to a news release.

Those who wish to volunteer can do so individually, as a group, or with a company. Projects are widely varied and are based on location, interest area, or by number of volunteers needed.

Silver Streaks Run Record to 2-0 in Wheelchair Handball

The Dekalb Silver Streaks rolled to a 2-0 record in wheelchair handball by defeating the Gwinnett Heat 11-1 on Saturday at Henderson Middle School.

The Silver Streaks put their undefeated record on the line against their archrivals West Georgia Wolverines as they go on the road to Warm Springs on Saturday, October 1. The game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation.
