Around the Region: Two Killed in Separate Crashes, Teens Accept Plea Deal in Vandalism Case and SWAT Suspect Turns Gun on Self

– Cumming Patch

Two people from Cumming were killed over the weekend in separate vehicle accidents.

Catherine M. Jarvis, 20, of Cumming, was killed Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Worth County, Ga. (located about 222 miles southeast of Cumming).

Also on Sunday afternoon, a 50-year-old man from Cumming, was killed in another vehicle collision, according to a news release.

Investigator Ron Tomblin of the  said Rick Michael Luter, 50, of Whitmire Road was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Mary Jane Luter, 53, a passenger in the truck, was flown to Atlanta Medical Center, but since has been released from the hospital.

– Dallas-Hiram Patch

Paulding County District Attorney Dick Donovan said 21 of the  last month in connection with  accepted his offer to send their cases to pre-trial diversion.

The pre-trial diversion program will have participants each performing 400 hours of community services at places approved by the pre-trial diversion supervisors, Supervision Services Inc.; each participant will have to pay the company $420 to cover 12 months of pre-trial diversion expenses.

Participants also will have to pay a $300 administration fee to the county, as well as restitution to the Paulding County School System. Under the latter requirement, those taking part in the program will be jointly liable for paying the school district’s clean-up costs, which .

 

– Suwanee Patch

The man who shot himself during a SWAT standoff Monday in Suwanee is in "bad shape" in a Gwinnett hospital, reports say. Update: He has since died, according to authorities.

Shuad Zaid Omar, 29, was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville on Monday afternoon after a standoff with police on Scales Road, where he has family, police said. The suspect had fled to Suwanee after he allegedly was involved in a double shooting in Auburn.

The Auburn shooting happened at a home on Parks Mill Road, according to WSB-TV. A neighbor heard arguing and called police, Auburn Police Chief Paul Nadeau said. The victims were flown to the hospital with critical injuries.
