Group Trying to Save WWII Memorial Tree - Douglasville Patch

Oak trees were planted on the grounds of the 1898 Douglas County Courthouse after World War II to memorialize the 23 Douglas County residents who died in the war. The trees were seriously affected in 1956 when the Courthouse burned and very few remain due to the fire effects, disease, and other reasons.

One of the memorial trees, a large Water Oak at the southwest corner of the Old Courthouse, is showing signs of distress. Oak trees “tell” when they are in distress by increasing the number of acorns it produces and drops, and last autumn the ground was covered, alerting Douglas County Property Management Office Manager and Certified Arborist Gail Woody to the problem.

Bank Robbery Suspect Dead After Police Chase - Alpharetta Patch

A bank robbery suspect wanted in Michigan is dead after Alpharetta police say the man shot himself rather than surrender to police.

Alpharetta's 911 center got a call from St. Claire, MI, police saying they were tracking a suspect by his cell phone as he drove south from Forsyth County into Alpharetta, according to George Gordon, spokesman for the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety.

An Alpharetta police lieutenant spotted the suspect's vehicle, and asked for backup. Seven separate patrol cars could be seen speeding from Westside Parkway near the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety building onto Old Milton Parkway after that call. But rush hour traffic soon turned that into a slow speed chase eastbound on Old Milton Parkway.
