Criminal Traffic, Economic Indicators and Good Reading

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Dacula Patch.

I wish I could just be glad that the police were able to get several pounds of pot off the street, but I cannot. It seems that every week brings news of another arrest on I-85 near Hamilton Mill for drugs, counterfeit merchandise or some other illegal activity. I know the police do all they can, but it is scary to think how many drug dealers and other criminals must pass through our area on a regular basis. Keep this in mind when you see patrol cars on I-85. Be glad they are out there and be sure to move over if you drive by an officer on a traffic stop.

I am really excited after the first virtual meeting of our Dacula Patch Book Club. Our new club members posted a lot of reading recommendations and I look forward to checking those books out at the library as soon as possible. If you’d like to participate in our book club, just come back on Wednesday afternoon for our next online meeting and let us know what you have been reading this past week -- good and bad.

Building permit activity, as dry a subject as it may seem, is actually a very good indicator of economic activity. Last week’s report was mixed. We had several foreclosure registration permits issued in the area, but we also had several land disturbance permits issued for new single-family construction. With home building at a near standstill for the past several years, hopefully these permits mean good news for our local economy.

Last week, I asked Mayor Wilbanks where he would take a visitor to Dacula and why. I recently had the opportunity to take one of my Patch bosses on a tour of the area. After reading Mayor Wilbanks’ response to my question, I wish he had been with us. Check out his answer by clicking on the link above -- you may very well learn something about Dacula’s history that you didn’t know.

As you all know, we have a lot of sports teams in the Dacula area -- not just high school teams, but DAA, MCAA, ALTA and more. Even though we cannot be at every athletic event, we can give you a means to share your sporting news with the community. Don’t be shy, click on the link above to find out how you can share your sports news on Patch. And if any of you want to start a SEC football blog, I'm all in. Roll Tide!
