Dawn of a New Era, Gun Crimes and Keeping a Weather Eye Open

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Dacula Patch.

Hunter to Be Sworn in Sunday

The long and, at-times, contentious campaign (I’m referring to the supporters of the candidates, not necessarily the candidates themselves) is over and Tommy Hunter, our new Gwinnett County District 3 Commissioner, will take his oath of office later today. Expectations are high for our new commissioner and I wish him the best of luck as he begins his four-year term in January.

You expect to read about these sorts of things happening in Norcross (no offense Norcross), but not Dacula. A large fight that disperses when a gun is fired and the cops arrive? Seriously?? When did that start happening in Dacula? The police report did not indicate how the fight started or what event was taking place at the Trophy Club of Apalachee when the fight broke out, but hopefully this was an isolated occurrence.

Store Employees Reportedly Robbed at Gunpoint

Speaking of things you expect to happen in Norcross (sorry again Norcross), armed robbers struck the Autozone on Dacula Road recently. Thankfully no one was hurt, but this could’ve easily gone another way entirely. First of all, this robbery took place at approximately 2 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon. Incredibly, there were no customers in the store at the time and none walked in during the robbery. Secondly, at least two of the robbers were likely under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident according to one of the victims. Last of all, the third robber is either potentially very violent or has watched too much television as he immediately threatened to kill one of the employees at the first sign of resistance. Folks, you just cannot be too careful out there.

I’d just like to take a moment to thank our resident weather expert Steve Brueck for making sure we were all aware of the potential for severe weather over the Christmas holiday. Steve posted updates throughout the storm and I, like many of you, kept checking back for the latest storm coverage. It is really awesome to have our own weather guru right here in Dacula. Thanks Steve!

Winter sports are underway now. If you are a player, coach, parent or fan, please let us know how your team is doing. You can post upcoming games on our free event calendar, share scores by posting a quick announcement or add photos or videos to our photo gallery so the community can see highlights from the games. Patch has no sports staff, so we are relying on you to let us know about your team’s accomplishments. Besides, why settle for just a tiny mention in the paper when you can post as many details, photos or even video as you like and then instantly share it with friends and family everywhere with just a few clicks? Give it a try -- it's fun!
