Help a Needy Child During the Christmas Season

If you are out and about, drop-off a new, unwrapped toy at one of many Toys for Tots collection sites in Dacula.

Dacula residents have a simple and convenient way to help less fortunate children this Christmas season. Multiple Dacula area business are volunteering to serve as Toys for Tots collection sites and most donations will be accepted through mid-December.

The concept for the Toys for Tots Program originated back in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, United States Marine Corps Reserve, and a group of Marine Reservists collected and then distributed over 5,000 toys to needy children. The project was successful and in 1948 the Marine Corps decided to adopt Toys for Tots and expand it into a nationwide campaign that would take place yearly at Christmas. According to the Toys for Tots website, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys of Tots Program has collected and distributed over 400 million toys to more than 188 million needy children nationwide over the past 62 years.

The Toys for Tots Program is simple. Community members drop off new, unwrapped toys at one of the collection sites, coordinators then pick up these toys and transport them to a central warehouse where they are sorted by age and gender. As Christmas approaches, coordinators working with local church groups and other volunteers distribute the toys to needy children throughout the community.
