Escalator Accident, Half-Naked Elvis and Trash Can Firebug

A look at a few of the top stories this week on Dacula Patch.

Many of you have probably seen an adult try to wrangle a stroller onto an escalator. Even though there are signs warning not to do it and even though most people probably realize it is not a great idea, adults continue to risk both their safety and their child’s by using escalators in an unsafe manner.  Any place that has an escalator has an elevator. You may have to wait a few seconds to board, but your safety and your child’s safety are worth it.

I admit it. I love Elvis. Forget older, overweight Elvis. Think of young, gorgeous, sexy Elvis. So, needless to say, I had to check out this video from Elvis impersonator Mark Phillips’ performance at Del Rio. I couldn’t tell from the video if Phillips is anywhere near as good-looking as young Elvis, but a few of the ladies in the video didn’t seem to think he was too hard on the eyes. Great stuff -- loved the finale.

Sure, a trash can fire may sound like a relatively minor thing, but consider this -- what happens when the “thrill” of setting fire to trash wears off? Will this firebug move on to bigger, more potentially deadly targets? I don’t know about you, but I had no idea there had been so many trash can fires in our area in the past few months. Even worse, fire officials fear many have gone unreported. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police. Also, if you find out your trash can has been burned, please file a report.

A 157-acre mixed-use development could have a huge economic impact on Dacula. The question city leaders are wrestling with is the potential overall impact on the city. You probably will not find many people who would say they want a large apartment complex near their home. The fact remains though that many people cannot afford to buy a home and those people need a place to live. Would an upscale “live, work, play” development be such a bad thing? Right now, we don’t even know if that is what developers want to do. What we do know is that whatever decisions council makes regarding this development will have an impact on future Dacula developments. City leaders are weighing their options carefully and will hopefully reach a solution that helps the town economically while protecting quality of life for its residents.

If you haven’t weighed in on this story yet, please take a moment to do so. I would really like to know your opinion.
