Expect Lane Closures, Traffic Pacing on I-85

As part of the conversion of the existing , the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will close lanes day and night on Wednesday, June 1 and Thursday, June 2.

Daytime work will involve lane closures only. Traffic pacing may occur overnight between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

This week, as weather permits, one or two segments of the HOV or inside lanes along the median wall in both directions will be closed. Lane closures will take place between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Up to four lanes could be closed after midnight. Traffic will be paced as needed. Traffic pacing and lane closures may occur at the following locations:

  • Daytime work on June 1 and 2 – The southbound HOV lane will be closed for work from Jimmy Carter Boulevard to Pleasantdale Road from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Overnight on June 1 - The southbound HOV lane will be closed for work from Beaver Ruin Road to Indian Trail Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Overnight on June 1 - The northbound HOV lane, the southbound HOV lane and the two adjacent left lanes will be closed for work from Old Peachtree Road to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Overnight on June 2 - The southbound HOV lane will be closed for work at Indian Trail Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Overnight on June 2 - The northbound HOV lane, the southbound HOV lane and the two adjacent left lanes will be closed for work from Sugarloaf Parkway to Old Peachtree Road from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The I-85 Express Lanes Project includes installation of 16 miles of fiber and signage along Interstate Highway 85 between Chamblee Tucker Road and Old Peachtree Road and along State Route 316 between I-85 and Riverside Parkway.

When completed, registered transit buses, motorcycles, alternative fueled vehicles and vehicles with three or more passengers will be allowed to use the inside (left) HOT lane for free, while single and double occupant vehicles will be allowed to use the lane if they choose to pay a variably priced toll.
