Fast Burglars, Disc Golf and Recounted Votes

A look at a few of the most notable stories this week on Dacula Patch.

I have never set foot on a disc golf course -- much less actually played the game -- but I am looking forward to giving it a go once the newest phase of Little Mulberry Park is complete. Construction on the disc golf course, pavilion, trail tie-ins and more is expected to begin in 2013 assuming all goes well on the budget front.

Despite a very fast response time from GCPD, a burglar or burglars still managed to escape after breaking into the Texaco on Harbins Road. Makes me wonder how much time actually elapsed between the time the alarm activated and the alarm company notified police. Think about it -- the alarm goes off, then the alarm company tries to contact the business owner/manager and then, if they don’t get an answer or reassurance that it is a false alarm, they call police. I suppose burglars realize they have several minutes before the police even get the call. The lesson? Don’t rely on a security system to keep your belongings safe -- lock them away, hide them, etc. -- just don’t leave valuables where a burglar can quickly grab them and skedaddle.

The “Shire” case is once again on the planning commission agenda. It has been tabled a couple of times, but now it looks as if it will finally go before the commission. If you have any thoughts you’d like to share with the planning commission on this or any of the other pending Dacula cases, now is the time.

In a day and age when computers do the counting for the most part, I don’t think anyone really seriously expected the outcome of the Aug. 21 runoff to turn out differently when the votes were recounted. However, given Tommy Hunter’s margin of victory, I think we can all understand why Mike Beaudreau would request a recount. Anyway, it is all said and done now and we will have a new representative on the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners come January 2013.

I read more than I watch television. Reading -- and walking my furry canine companion Buddy -- are my two major stress relievers. Here’s the thing though -- I don’t have time to attend a regular book club meeting so it would be really cool if you’d come to my virtual meeting. If you enjoy reading books, join the discussion. I don’t have time to read all the books at the library, so please let me know which ones I should get and which ones I should avoid.
