Fence Road Emergency Repairs Completed

Road closed after large sinkhole formed.

Fence Road has reopened after being closed for emergency repairs.

The Gwinnett County Department of Transportation (GDOT) closed Fence Road from Hebron Church Road to American Legion Road Thursday morning after a large sinkhole formed in the roadway.

GDOT maintenance supervisor Mark Stonecypher said the sinkhole was approximately five feet deep and 12-14 feet across. The sinkhole occurred above a culvert pipe, but the pipe itself was not damaged, Stonecypher said.

"We really don't know if it was poor soil compaction or not," he said.

Crews excavated the sink hole and removed the loose soil. The hole was refilled with rock and was compacted before a new layer of asphalt was laid.

Stonecypher said crews did an excellent job making sure the roadway was open in time for the Labor Day holiday.

"The guys did a really good job of getting it open again in just one day," he said.
