GDOT Suspends Construction Work for Holiday Weekend

No lane closures planned from Friday, Sept. 2 through the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Motorists will have more enjoyable weekend this Labor Day thanks to the Georgia Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) decision to suspend all construction-related lane closures from 5 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, through 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.  Some long-term lane closures may remain in place.

Heavy holiday traffic is expected. GDOT reminds motorists to exercise caution as GDOT crews may be working in close proximity to highways. Emergency lane closures may also become necessary over the weekend.

According to GDOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith, Jr., Georgia has averaged nearly 2,000 accidents statewide during recent Labor Day weekends.

“On average, more than 15 people die and more than 900 are injured on Georgia roads each year during this holiday,” Vance said in a released statement. “It should be a time of rest and festivities dedicated to working men and women, not of tragedy and grief.  Please be very careful and do not drive distracted or while impaired.”
