How to Trap a Leprechaun

St. Patrick's Day is right around the corner, here's what you will need to know to catch a leprechaun!

Do you have mischievous little people hanging out around your house this time of the year? If not, you just might by the end of the week. If you would like to try and capture one of the little fellows here is what you need to know.

First of all it’s important to understand that leprechauns are very tricky and hard to catch. They are a type of fairy from Irish mythology and folklore. According to the website Your Irish, leprechauns are small enough to sit comfortably on your shoulder and the are typically dressed in small suits with waist coats, hats and buckled shoes. Aside for being devious tricksters leprechauns are harmless to humans. Legend has it that if you can catch one they will use their magical powers to grant you three wishes in return for their release.

Leprechaun traps don’t have to be elaborate to work, just tricky. Remember it will take a very creative mind to catch a leprechaun! Adding bait to your trap is one sure fire way to attract a Leprechaun as is the use of four leaf clovers. One crafter on about.com suggests painting small rocks gold to resemble golden nuggets. Other leprechaun catchers try to lure the little fairies in with Lucky Charms cereal.

There are some great examples of leprechaun traps you can make on Disney’s Family Fun website including the Leprechaun Hat Pit Trap, Rainbow Cage Drop and Tricky Door. The Crafting Chicks designed a fabulous trap using some homemade golden coins to trick the sneaky little guys.

The good news for would be leprechaun catchers, if you don’t come away with a catch you do have the fun of building your trap to remember and if you’re lucky and your trap comes close, the leprechaun may just drop some of his golden coins when he is trying to escape!
