I-85 Traffic Pacing Expected This Week

Work to install new signs continues.

As part of the conversion of the existing , the Georgia Department of Transportation will continue work to install more than 60 signs along the I-85 corridor next week.

Daytime and nighttime work is planned. Traffic pacing may occur between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m.

This week, as weather permits, one or two segments of the HOV or inside lanes along the median wall in both directions will be closed during the overnight hours. Northbound lane closures will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and southbound closures will occur from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Up to three lanes could be closed after midnight.

Traffic will be paced one to three times as needed. Overnight lane closures may occur at the following locations:

  • Sunday, June 12 - Along the median wall for the installation of new signage from south of Chamblee Tucker Road to north of Northcrest Road. A second work zone will close the HOV lane of  I-85 north only from south of SR 140/Jimmy Carter Blvd. to SR 378/Beaver Ruin Road.
  • Monday, June 13 – Along the median wall for the installation of new signage from one mile south of SR 140/Jimmy Carter Blvd tone mile north of SR 140?Jimmy Carter Blvd. A second work zone will close the HOV lane of I-85 south only from I-285 to Chamblee Tucker Road.       
  • Tuesday, June 14 - Along the median wall for the installation of new signage from Indian Trail Road to SR 378/Beaver Ruin Road. A second work zone will be in place along SR 315 west only from I-85 to Sugarloaf Parkway.
  • Wednesday, June 15 - Along the median wall for the installation of new signage from the Old Norcross overpass to the Boggs Road overpass. A second work zone for I-85 south only from  Boggs Road to north of Old Peachtree Road.
  • Thursday, June 16 - Work is planned for the installation of new signage on SR 316 west only from I-85 to Sugarloaf Parkway . A second work zone along I-85 south only from Boggs Road to SR 120/Duluth Highway.

Daytime work is expected to take place in the following locations in the northbound lanes from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the southbound lanes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

  • Monday, June 13 – I-85 HOV lane southbound, from the New Center Way overpass to Indian Trail Road.
  • Tuesday, June 14 - I-85 north and south closing the left lane or HOV lane from the north of the Dawson Boulevard overpass to Northcrest Road.
  • Wednesday, June 15 – I-85 south only closing the left lane or HOV lane from Old Peachtree Road  to SR 317/Lawrenceville Suwanee Road.
  • Thursday, June 16 – I-85 north and south closing the left lane or HOV lane from Sugarloaf Parkway to Old Peachtree Road
  • Friday, June 17 - I-85 north only closing the left lane or HOV lane from Sugarloaf Parkway to Old Peachtree Road

The I-85 Express Lanes Project includes installation of 16 miles of fiber and signage along Interstate Highway 85 between Chamblee Tucker Road and Old Peachtree Road and along State Route 316 between I-85 and Riverside Parkway.

When completed, registered transit buses, motorcycles, alternative fueled vehicles and vehicles with three or more passengers will be allowed to use the inside (left) HOT lane for free, while single and double occupant vehicles will be allowed to use the lane if they choose to pay a variably priced toll.
